Guest guest
Hello- Been lurking here since before my surgery (upper, lower, genio) and it's been a great resource. So now I have a question I haven't seen before. My jaws only close (teeth touch) on one side. There's about a 3/16 gap on one side. My OS and OD both say it could be swelling, but I'm curious if anyone else experienced this. Other than that, I only have a little external swelling from under my nose to my lower lip, both of which are still a little numb. I can eat and chew (bands off for this), but since I only close on one side, it's really a pain. I think I rinse more food out of my mouth when I'm done than I think I swallowed. Overall, this was much more involved than either my OS or OD alluded to. -Jay

Guest guest
Jay, after my surgery...my back molars didn't touch at all. Part of it I think was having the splint in my mouth during my recovery. But the way my OS and orthodondist fixed the prob was for me to wear rubber bands on my very back molars on both sides...had to wear them for a couple months...and that pulled my back teeth together. Now the come together perfectly. They also fixed a small crossbite that I had after my surgery with those rubber bands. It's amazing what those little rubber bands can do! Guest guest
I was advised by my OS prior to surgery that because he would be moving my upper jaw forward and then down in the front (to close my open bite) my back molars would not come together right after the surgery. He advised though that between the fine tuning that the OD would do afterward and gravity they would come back together in a short period of time. I am six weeks post op and have noticed that my left side has already started coming back together. > > Hello- > > Been lurking here since before my surgery (upper, lower, genio) and > it's been a great resource. Guest guest
Hi Jay. I am nine months post-op (today, as a matter of fact--that must be why I decided to check in on this site after several months away). My teeth on the right side did not touch until about a month ago. I've been out of braces since the beginning of September, but it wasn't until my ortho cut the ends off of my bottom retainer that everything finally started fitting--they feel GREAT now. I'd definitely give it some time--it may be an orthodontic issue at this point and you probably still have a ways to go with that. > > Hello- > > Been lurking here since before my surgery (upper, lower, genio) and > it's been a great resource. Guest guest
Thanks all for the replies, I'm not sure I like the sound of 8-9 months. I posted because my OD commented that he normally doesn't have as much work to do after surgery. I'll let everyone know what they say. I'm just afraid I won't get a straight story since my OD and OS work together frequently. -Jay
