Guest guest
Hi all, I'm 4 days post-op of what was apparently a pretty rough surgery (I'm a bleeder, it turns out -- so was in ICU for a few days) -- upper jaw moved upwards about 5 mm with a genioplasty to move the chin forward. I'm banded (not wired) shut. My breathing feels incredibly labored due to to nasal congestion and all the horrible blood going down the back of my throat and clotting (and staying there!). Now that I am home I don't have the suction tube to pull all that blood out, and breathing is hugely difficult (the little suction bulb that I bought before hand doesn't really do the trick). Any suggestions? It's driving me nuts, because it makes it so hard to sleep. Any help greatly appreciated! (And happy new year, everyone!) Guest guest
Sara, I don't really know what to tell you, but I totally feel your pain! I was in that same situation post surgery about 3 weeks ago, and it really isn't pleasant! I thought I was going to have to go back to the hospital because I couldn't breath. I know how you feel. The biggest trick for me was just not panicking. You'll be ok, and it will go away. Did they give you any nasal spray at the hospital? My dr. prescribed two different ones and they helped a lot. I also found that 12 hour sudafed helped, although not as quickly as I had hoped. The 24 hour kind didn't seem as effective for me. But I think I recall , my surgery buddy on the board, using a liquid sudafed that he said helped, although he was fortunate to not have too much congestion. Also, do you have a humidifier going? That helped more than anything else. If you don't, perhaps you could try turning the shower on and just sitting in the bathroom with the door closed and the shower running. The warm moist air was very helpful. And, as hard as it is, don't cry! That was a huge mistake I made. I was totally in a panic about not being able to breath from the clot in my throat, so I started to cry, which just made my nose all stuffy, which really didn't help. You'll get through it...hang in there!!

Guest guest
Thanks so much for the encouragement . I haven't been running the humidifier much, so I'll take that suggestion right now and get it going. I did get a prescription for Nasonex nasal spray (plus I can use all the plain saline nose spray I want), but unfortunately for several different reasons I have a sensitivity to Sudafed and other types of decongestants, so can't really take them (my heart rate will go through the roof if I do). And so far I haven't really cried... I don't think I have the energy to do it! ;-) Thanks again for your support. Anyone else out there who wants to share the yuckiness of blood clots, feel free -- I'm all ears! (And throat, haha) Sara > > Sara, > > I don't really know what to tell you, but I totally feel your pain! Guest guest
A few suggestions that I hope will help. First go for the humidifier. Second, drink plenty of water. Keep a bottle or cup near at all times and drink, drink, drink. Third, use q-tips and a solution of half warm water and half peroxide to clean your nose out. It sounds gross and looks even more so when you clean things but it does help tremendously. I am six weeks post op from upper and the sinus congestion was the only thing I found hard to live with. All of the above helped though and after the first week I was able to breathe relatively easy once again. Good luck and hope your New Year is a great one. > > Hi all, > > I'm 4 days post-op of what was apparently a pretty rough surgery (I'm > a bleeder, it turns out -- so was in ICU for a few days) -- upper jaw > moved upwards about 5 mm with a genioplasty to move the chin > forward. Guest guest
Thanks for your suggestions too, Felicia -- I'm already getting some relief from the peroxide and water solution. I'm officially more grateful for this board than I could ever have imagined -- who'da thought I could post a question on new year's eve and get some help so quickly?! What a blessing! > > A few suggestions that I hope will help. First go for the > humidifier. Second, drink plenty of water. Keep a bottle or cup > near at all times and drink, drink, drink. Guest guest
There are portable suctioning machines, and here you can rent them from home health care services. (My doc sends everybody home with one, primarily so you can get rid of what you need to if you run into trouble on the way home.) Some docs think that suctioning is a bad idea, so check first. Mine cost something like $50 for a month, and I never needed it. And oddly enough, that was the only expense my insurance didn't cover. C. > Sara, WOW!
