Guest guest
I drink virtually 100% carbonated beverages as my liquids. It has not stretched my pouch in the 3 years since my operation. Guest guest
I enjoy an occasional diet soda without any ill effects. I can't drink an entire can and don't drink sugared soda because I dump pretty easily. Guest guest
The whole carbonation thing is weird. It doesn't make sense to me, because liquids just flow through a pouch so quickly. I've seen it on my scope!!! And of course, I wait at least one hour after eating to drink anything, except for a tiny sip for a vitamin. I think early on, it would have hurt, and I can't drink them quickly, but I do like a slug every now and then. I would think constant eating past full would be a greater culprit, but then who really knows since some pouches seem to stretch and some don't. I'm ready to file carbonation away with the poodle in the microwave story. My doc serves them at meetings. It didn't stretch mine in a permanent " now my pouch is bigger forever " fashion, but it stretches it enough for a while (if I have it just before a meal) that I can certainly eat much more food than if I left it alone. And more than if I have an equal amount of a non-carbonated beverage before the same meal. If you're really looking to sabotage your weight loss, drink soda WHILE eating your meal. Doing so, I have eaten 2 cheeseburgers and the fries, or an entire foot-long Subway sandwich, any variety, with chips. As long as I keep drinking that soda, I can eat anything, in any amount. Which is why I've stopped doing that. I gained back 50 pounds. Do I still drink soda? Yes. Do I still drink it during or just before meals? No. ~~ Lyn G

Guest guest
Poodles or carbonation? Well, I drink diet cokes, too. Entirely too many. At least one every day, and that is way too many. Earned me a nasty look from the endocrinologist, too. My theory is that docs who say our pouches will stretch from carbonation think we are too stupid to burp. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I CAN manage to burp. Now, grazing, that's a different animal. Painless pouch stretching. You never feel thing. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
At the risk of expenditure of serious finger energy and getting caught in a spate of competitive typing, I will just weigh in (gad I hate that term) and say that I was told by the nutritonist and all the staff of my surgeon that doing carbonated drinks was not a good thing. I was told that the reason it was not a good thing was that very early on an initial study was done of post ops in a specific region/defined quantity and amongst the folks who fared best long term with weight and other issues after surgery they sought to identify what things were common amongst those who seemed to have achieved more of their goals. The only thing that was identified was that this group did not do carbonated beverages. I also vaguely running across something in a study somewhere confirming that. No, I cannot quote it. No, I do not know if it was peer reviewed. No, I do not take the whole issue seriously and have done carbonated beverages for a good long while. I will say that all of the surrounding circumstances are not really clear to me but resumption of carbonated beverages did occur along about a time when the weight loss slowed to a stop and a slight bounceback began and later grew. Resumption of intake of carbonated beverages was also along about the time when my capacity for food intake increased as well. I hasten to add that there were a lot of things going on at that particular time frame and any or all of them may have been root causative factors in my not reaching the # I personally wanted. I certainly am not saying anyone should or should not because I am absolutely convinced that I am the last human on earth to advise anyone else what to eat or drink, - - the absolute very last. On carbonation, I have no idea whether or not it is causative or purely coincidental. I am just saying what my experience was. Dan Slone Surgery 5/2/2000 Re: Carbonation? Poodles or carbonation? Well, I drink diet cokes, too. Entirely too many. At least one every day, and that is way too many. Earned me a nasty look from the endocrinologist, too. My theory is that docs who say our pouches will stretch from carbonation think we are too stupid to burp. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I CAN manage to burp. Now, grazing, that's a different animal. Painless pouch stretching. You never feel thing. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
I started back on carbonated beverages when I started to get hungry thinking this may thwart the hunger. So much for studies. Fay

Guest guest
I couldn't tolerate soda until I was about 2 years out, and I discovered that I could tolerate it by accident. I was very thirsty when I got into a restaurant and without thinking ordered a Diet Coke. I was so thirsty that I drank some and discovered that it didn't bother me, so I drank the rest. Now, I drink soda - I go through phases, sometimes I'll go weeks without having any, other times I drink it every day. I DO know how to burp, so I'm not too worried about it hurting me. lol. What the poodle in the microwave story. Sounds more interesting than soda bubbles. ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.com® http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! ® Re: Carbonation?
