regaining feeling, 3 months post-op

Hi,

I know a lot of people who are recovering from surgery have been

wondering how long it takes for feeling to come back. The general

answer is it can take a long time, or a short time, or it may not

come back at all. I am about 4 months post-op, and I am still numb on

the left side of my lower lip and chin, but I am regaining some

sensation. Hopefully a description of what I'm feeling will give some

hope to those who are still wondering whether or not feeling will

return, and how far along the progress is.

During the first month, I was completely numb. There was a definite

border between my numb areas and my feeling areas. Eventually,

however, I noticed that instead of being completely numb, I would get

tingly if I touched the border area.

Second month, I could feel pain. If I pinched my lower lip really

hard with my fingers, I could feel the pressure and it hurt a little.

Similarly, if something is extremely hot, I get the same pain

sensation. Also, the tingly area that used to be only at the border

spread inward.

Now I'm at my third month and I can feel cold. I noticed this a few

days ago when I was drinking ice water. If I drink water and swish it

around so that it touches the inside of my lower lip, between the

lower lip and lower teeth, the entire area feels strangely cold. This

cold sensation is still without the touch sensation, so it's

impossible to tell whether the cold is coming from the outside or

inside. It kinda feels like I am drooling. Now, the tingly area has

grown almost completely into the area which used to be numb. If I

touch my chin or lower lip, I still don't " feel " like I used to, but

it tingles so I know something is there.

Of course, your experience might be different, but I thought it would

help to share mine.

Oh and BTW, my braces are now off :-D

Hello,

This is soooooo wierd because I know how different recovery can be

from person to person but after reading your post, I am amazed at how your

description of your feeling coming back is almost exactly matched to my

experience. What surgery did you have? I had my lower jaw advanced on Oct 14. My

braces are still on.........I go to see my ortho on the 10th and will ask him

how much longer till I am free!!!!!!!

Wow, that's cool that our experiences are similar. =)

I had upper/lower/genio on Oct 5. Good luck with the rest of your

braces!
