Guest guest
I am 4 weeks post-op today (upper, lower and genio) and still wired shut for another 2 or so. I went to see my orthodontist today. He noticed immediately that my lips are asymmetrical. Flat and normal on the left side but pulled back on the right slightly. He said that it was possible that my iips were getting interfered with by the surgical lugs (and he immediately bent some of them away from the lip) but he did seem a little concerned. He asked me whether I had mentioned this to the surgeon. I did ask him at my first post-op consult but at that point I had so much swelling, this seemed not to be anything exceptional. I see the surgeon for my weekly check up on tursday by which time I guess the surgical hook factor will have worked itself out. The OD said that it looked more likely that the muscle above the lip on the right side was pulling the lip up slightly. I still have very little feeling at all in my lips, gums and palate. so my questions are 1. Anyone else had this issue of asymmetrical lips 2. or the muscle above the lip pulling the lip back slightly or into a different shape than onto the other half 3. If so, how was this fixed? Or how long did it take to heal away? 4. I am doing lots of exercises with my mouth but can't open obviously as I am wired. Will opening up bring new mobility and healing to my lips. It sounds trivial but, especially with so much time on my hands to worry, I am a bit concerned that i have a problem there.

Guest guest
I'm not sure if my problem is the same, but my upper lip is not symmetrical on both sides either. I had upper and lower on Sept. 17th and it was obvious right away that my lip looked thinner and a bit more " tucked in " or pulled on the left side. The surgeon said it was just due to swelling, etc., and although it got a little better, I still notice it and can feel the difference when I talk. I had noticed early on that the stitch on my upper gum line where they stitched my lip back seemed sloppier on the left side, but it was difficult to tell with all the gross healing tissues, etc. Now that it's pretty well healed, it's obvious that the stitch is different on that side. I asked my surgeon about it in December and she admitted that the stitch was lower on that side, but that I should try to massage it to see if the scar tissure loosens up. I highly doubt this will solve the issue and it hasn't thus far. I will bring it up again when I see her in March. Other people say they don't notice unless I mention it, but if I raise my lip and show the stitch they can tell right away. Also, the stitch they did on my lower left side near my molars is very sloppy and has created an extra " pocket " or " divide " between my gumline and cheek, which is very annoying because stuff always gets caught in there. Two surgeons worked on my at the same time, so apparently, whoever did the left side was in a hurry. I'm going to bring this up to her at my appointment too. Anyhow, you might want to lift your upper lip and see if you can see any difference in the stitches, which could be the problem. My upper lip also got thinner as a consequence of raising the upper jaw, so I'm not happy with my upper lip in general. And my lips were the ONE thing I liked about my face before surgery, so it may sound trivial, but it matters to me. Men who knew I was having the surgery even specifically said " I hope it doesn't change your lips " , but unfortunately it did. Luckily my lips were really full to begin with, so I had " enough " to lose, but I admit that I liked my upper lip better before. Sorry if I'm not much help, but at least there's someone else out there who knows how you feel. I'm curious to ask my surgeon if she can cut the tissue and re-stitch my lip correctly. If it's not a huge ordeal, I may consider it. -- > > I am 4 weeks post-op today (upper, lower and genio) and still wired > shut for another 2 or so. > > I went to see my orthodontist today.
