Dave - I'm even more on board on this topic. To me this is kind of like

" cheating " . Water is water. If the guideline is to drink 64 ounces of

water, then why try to cheat it and include other stuff. Just buck up and

drink it.

Then again, I feel exactly the same way about countining protein shakes as

calories. If you are counting calories, then you need to count the shakes.

Who are you trying to trick by not counting them?

I didn't try any alcohol to about 4 months out. I started slow -- wine --

beer. It's amazing how little it takes before I have to stop. I can do some

liquor -- but again - -I take it easy. I used to be able to drink quite a

bit before my surgery and it would never hit. Now I'm a cheap date! The

only restriction I have is mixed drinks -- due to how much sugar the mixes

have. And even then I just take it easy and I'm usually fine. I eat before

I drink too . .that seems to help.

Everyone is different - we hear that alot! Beer was fine -- and it didn't

have to be flat. However -- I had to sip -- it sits heavier on my belly than

most liquids. I hope I dont shock anyone by being able to drink so soon. .

..my Dr. just never put restrictions on it -- like everything else he told me

to try it a bit at a time and to know my limits. He also warned me about how

much faster it hits the system . .

Just my experience.

Absolutely false!! No credible evidence of any kind to support that

statement. The only liquids that will cause you to need to take more

liquids are those that contain salt. Caffeinated beverages will make

you empty your bladder more often, but do not increase the overall

amount voided.

Hi ,

What kind of surgery did you have? I had a distal RNY, and this is how it is

for me.

I personally think of alcohol as just another form of sugar. I don't pay much

attention to carbs, but I avoid sugar like the plague. I am a sugar addict, so

I can't have just a little. I even have to avoid eating too much fruit. I can

gain 2 or 3 lbs in one day if I eat more than one piece of fruit a day.

I would highly recommend that you not start on alcohol until you get your weight

loss going again. If you're having problems with it now, alcohol will make it

worse. If you are not doing so already, I would suggest that you start paying

attention to " white carbs " (white bread, white pasta, white rice, etc.) and

definately sweets. Increase your protein shakes and remember to drink you

water. Are you taking vitamins, B12, iron, calcium, etc. These are very

important to weight loss as well as general health. If you want some more

details, let me know.

Just so you know, Ray doesn't have much credible evidence the other way,

except what was written by and for the coffee industry. Most of us believe

that you should increase your water intake based on how much caffeine you

take in. How much exactly is not yet understood, but you do need to hydrate

more if you drink caffeine.

You waited all this time to have a drink? Wow. I had my first try

at alcohol at 2 months out. Then, it was a spritzer, but since I

really don't care for wine, I soon graduated to a light vodka & club

soda (my usual drink). As for beer, I'm not a beer drinker either,

but I would try one at home first. Since you haven't had a dink in a

long time, and you're probably not much of a drinker anyway, it might

hit you really fast. Also, the carbonation in beer may be a little

hard to handle. So, try it at home first and see how you do.

As for being at a standstill with the weight, if you go back a couple

of weeks and read the archives, a bunch of us just did 3 days of

protein to try to jumpstart out weight loss or just to detox from

carbs and sugar. It worked for most of us, so you might want to give

that a try.

Good luck,

in NJ

I still haven't had a drink. I am over 14 months post op. Just haven't had

the urge. This could be because my favorite drinks were a " fuzzy navel "

(orange juice with peach schnapps) and a Kahlua Sombrero. Both of these

would be way to high in sugar for me. The other stuff just doesn't appeal to

me.
