Hi,

I'm almost two years out from RNY surgery now and not doing so well.

I'm currently in therapy because I'm depressed over my poor progress

with the surgery among other things. It seems that I've failed at the

surgery as well as everything else I've done to diet and it's my fault

because I haven't stuck with the program. My therapist is concerned and

is pushing me to check out my surgery to make sure everything is in

tact. I think I might be having some problems with vitamin and mineral

absorption. Can someone share with me what foods, vitamins and minerals

we have a problem with or lead me to a place on the web where I can find

some specific information about these issues? I think if she understood

these things, she would better understand what I'm facing with the

physical issues.

Thanks in advance,

Cindy

What makes you think you are having problems with absorption? Are your lab

results coming back irregular?

There are some nutrients we seem to have a harder time absorbing than others,

but we can be deficient in any of them, at any time. Of particular concern

(or the most common) are deficiencies in protein, calcium, iron, carnitine,

B12, and zinc. Most of these deficiencies can be resolved with over the

counter oral supplements; some people require injections (particularly with

B12 and iron), or prescription supplements.

The only way you can know for sure what you're missing is to have

comprehensive lab work done, in conjunction with a bone scan to verify the

condition of your bones (the best way to determine whether you're getting the

calcium you need).

When you say you haven't stuck to the program, what do you mean? You have

engaged in unhealthy eating habits? You have not paid attention to your

supplements?
