Guest guest
Dear Brave Souls: I hope you are looking for a good day ... I am interested in making a compilation for our grad list of the following that I would then post on grad list and in archives for others to see: I ASK *ONLY* THOSE ONE OR MORE YEARS OUT TO PARTICIPATE. If you can, just copy this list and answer each question, leaving intact the question and the number at the beginning of each question. (It is easier for me to read that way--thanks--grin) 1. Are you male or female? 2. Starting Weight? 3. Weight now? 4. Surgery type and date? 5. Amount bypassed if you know? 6. Length of common channel if you know? 7. Pros of your surgery? 8. Cons of your surgery? 9. greatest joy 10. greatest challenge 11. Your age at time of surgery? 12. Any advice to others? (about 5 lines if you can manage) 13. Your surgery doc? if you care to say 14. Your regimen of food and exercise? (Please summarize in a short paragraph; aprx calories per day estimate/and minutes of what kind of exercise/and how often?) 15. Which of these adjuncts do you use? (hypnosis, prayer, affirmations, journal keeping, therapy, OA, meddies, etc.) 16. What is your daily vitamin and mineral supplementation? You can e-mail me PRIVATELY. Your identity will be kept confidential, and any identifying data will be removed from the final list. On another note, I am almost done revising the " over 55 age " list and will post it again this weekend. Thank you every one for contributing. I will also put it in the archive and anyone who wants to add to it then can. (I don't know how to once its archived, but I think you can add a separate file as an addendum) Secondly, the list of medications taken by various people is also almost complete, and I will post it onlist first of next week and also upload it to archives on grad list. It is very interesting, and I think you will find it valuable. Remember, no one ought 'adjust' their meds by themselves without their doctor's supervision or permission. The list of meddies will say that more than once throughout. The data is for information only, not to be used to self-medicate or self-prescribe. But, again, I think you will find it interesting and valuable. None of hat I am compiling are " scientific studies. " They are compilations or lists of information people have written out about themselves from their point of view. I find them very valuable love, ceep

Guest guest
1. Are you male or female? Female 2. Starting Weight? 352 3. Weight now? 201 4. Surgery type and date? Lap RNY, June 29, 2001 5. Amount bypassed if you know? Approx. 100 cm 6. Length of common channel if you know? Don't know 7. Pros of your surgery? A new life 8. Cons of your surgery? Still have to diet and exercise and " watch it " big time; I don't think a lot of people realize just how much going into this thing. 9. greatest joy? Looking in the mirror 10. greatest challenge? Changing my attitudes about food. 11. Your age at time of surgery? 39 12. Any advice to others? (about 5 lines if you can manage) This is a great way to jumpstart your weight loss efforts, but by NO MEANS the end to your food/weight problems. The pounds will not just melt off AND STAY OFF without almost as much effort as without the surgery. It is DEFINITELY only a tool. 13. Your surgery doc? if you care to say Dr. Lee Swanstrom 14. Your regimen of food and exercise? (Please summarize in a short paragraph; aprx calories per day estimate/and minutes of what kind of exercise/and how often?) Exercise 5 times a week alternating lower and body weights each day, 1+ hours of cardio (swimming, running, biking) 5X a week. This is when I'm in the groove. Once there, I will not waiver for a long time. Once I slack, it can be difficult to get back in the groove. Diet: try to eat six times a day, heavy on the proteins (protein shake for morning, high protein lunch/dinner) Again, not always perfect here; in fact, rarely so. 15. Which of these adjuncts do you use? (hypnosis, prayer, affirmations, journal keeping, therapy, OA, meddies, etc.) Just started seeing a psychiatrist. I just started using Fitday.com to track food/exercise. I also keep a personal journal. 16. What is your daily vitamin and mineral supplementation 315 mg. calcium citrate+vitamin D 3x daily; Children's sugar free chewable multi. Vitamins 2x daily, iron (niferex 150 forte) 2x daily. Guest guest
1. Are you male or female? ***100% girl! 2. Starting Weight? ***500 lbs 3. Weight now? ***as of my checkup yesterday, 164 (but now pushing to get to 150 something) 4. Surgery type and date? ***10/26/98 open RNY proximal/medial-not transected (feel like I got a Volkswagen instead of a Cadillac but at least it gets me where I'm going!) 5. Amount bypassed if you know? ***150 cm 6. Length of common channel if you know? ***not a clue, and don't see it noted in the operative report 7. Pros of your surgery? ***The obvious is that it saved my life. No need to go into details, pretty much the same I suppose as any MO person. But for me, the fact the dumping even exists is a great pro. I need that, I need to know that I can and will get ill if I eat sugars. Just the thought of it keeps me relatively straight! (counting on which way your head is turned I suppose) 8. Cons of your surgery? ***Umm, the fact that it is surgery? That it isn't a cure for obesity? As a super MO person I had difficulties with my incision requiring 10 weeks out of work. It was messy, frustrating and unexpected. A scary time for me and hubby. Not really prepared for that. Also, didn't have a large support network, now I know how important that is preop. 9. greatest joy ***Oh Ceep, how could I even begin to list them? If I had to pick one...or two, or three... Ok, being able to give back after a lifetime of taking. Being able to help my sister and niece have their WLS. Being able to help so many. Paying it forward. 10. greatest challenge ***I think the emotional changes. The size changes, while rapid...were wonderful! But wrestling with the demons that I had buried under those layers of fat. Incredibly hard. Didn't think I'd have the inner strength to deal with them, and amazed when I find that I do. 11. Your age at time of surgery? ***42! So at the ripe old age of 47 I still don't make your other list 12. Any advice to others? (about 5 lines if you can manage) ***If you have a support group available GO TO IT! Support is vital! You are only in this alone if you want to be. There are many travelers on this road, all ready to lend a hand or a kind word 13. Your surgery doc? if you care to say ***Barry L Fisher Las Vegas 14. Your regimen of food and exercise? (Please summarize in a short paragraph; aprx calories per day estimate/and minutes of what kind of exercise/and how often?) ***Generally I eat 4 times a day. Sometimes supplement with protein shakes, sometimes not. Can't eat much meat so mostly salads, veggies and fish. (been on a jello and cottage cheese kick for a month now!) About 1200 calories a day. I also try to stay away from carbs as I find that they are triggers for me. Make me want to graze all day. Exercise: When I'm being good, I try to get out and walk 3 miles three times a week. Other times...I don't! 15. Which of these adjuncts do you use? (hypnosis, prayer, affirmations, journal keeping, therapy, OA, meddies, etc.) ***Prayer for sure, therapy, support group (3 times a month and online every week) meds for depression and anxiety. 16. What is your daily vitamin and mineral supplementation? Multi vit 2X daily Flax seed oil 2X daily 2000 mgs calcium citrate with mag and D B complex sublingual B12 (once a week now, my B12 went thru the roof) Zinc Vit C and I'll toss ground flax seed in whatever strikes my fancy as well as mixing my upcal with my nondairy dry creamer for a little extra protein. Secondly, the list of medications taken by various people is also almost complete, ***Add Topomax to me please!! After more than 6 weeks of daily, excruciating, headaches...I've gone 2 days with none!!

I have cut out fruit juices (except for very occasional small drink and a bit of cassis nectar added to my CrystalLite Ice Tea), sodas, and other sugary drinks. On rare occasions, maybe once a month, I have a beer or a glass of wine with dinner. I do a weight training round of machines and 30 min. of aerobic exercise at least twice/week, and I walk 2-3 miles when the weather is nice. I take Tai Chi lessons twice/week. >15. Then, breakfast meat of some kind with an egg and a small piece of bread. My meals are, in quantity, about what a " normal " person would eat. I have begun to eat at least one serving of fresh fruit daily: a navel orange, grapes, melon, etc. I also have at least one serving of no-no sweets a day: a scoop of ice cream, or 2-3 cookies, or a few pieces of chocolate candy. >15. Which of these adjuncts do you use? (hypnosis, prayer, affirmations, >journal keeping, therapy, OA, meddies, etc.) Zilch. Nada. Nichevo. Gar nichts. If anything helps, it is keeping in touch with " litter mates " on several WLS Yahoo lists. >16. What is your daily vitamin and mineral supplementation? 12 Vita4Life (vitamins + minerals, including lots of calcium citrate and Vit. D) 1 high-potency mixed acidophilus culture capsule (Solgar Advanced 40+) Also: 1 81 mg aspirin (with breakfast) 1 FiberCon (with lunch) --Steve

Guest guest
Do you want list of my meds and supplements? On here or separate? The list is rather burgeoning, but I'll just add it here...if it isn't what you are looking for, just delete that part. 1. Are you male or female? Female 2. Starting Weight? 310 3. Weight now? 126 4. Surgery type and date? Distal RNY gastric bypass with transected stomach. 5/30/00 5. Amount bypassed if you know? anywhere between 12 and 15 feet...depending on how much intestine I had to begin with. 6. Length of common channel if you know? 55-60 " 7. Pros of your surgery? It has given me back my life and my health. I love wearing sizes 4 and 6...somehow I keep thinking it is a mistake! 8. Cons of your surgery? I guess the tedious part is the constant need to supplement, and test! But it was a great tradeoff. 9. greatest joy 1) Throwing my cane out the car window, (in the garage..no one was hurt..lol!) and no longer having to haul around an electric scooter if I went somewhere. Very emotional moments! 2) Having people tell me I look ten years younger than I am..and their shock when I tell them I have great-grandchildren. =^) 10. greatest challenge Following the program to the letter. Making sure I have all my supplements ahead of time, and never running out. (I haven't, so far! =^)) 11. Your age at time of surgery? 57 12. Any advice to others? (about 5 lines if you can manage) If you are going to do the extreme thing and have surgery, know what it is all about, educate, educate, educate yourself. Then follow a program of supplementation and remain thin and healthy both at the same time. Follow the success and failures of those who went before you...ie this list, and use everyone's experience pro and con to aid in your own recovery. 13. Your surgery doc? if you care to say Docs Fox and Oh. 14. Your regimen of food and exercise? (Please summarize in a short paragraph; aprx calories per day estimate/and minutes of what kind of exercise/and how often?) I rely mostly on protein shakes and vitamins for my well-being, and eat what it is that I crave, within reason. Right now, the strange craving is for California navel oranges. Got to watch the sugar though. Could really get carried away on those things. But this is the season...I don't follow a diet, but listen to my body cravings, and try not to let the head hunger dictate. 15. Which of these adjuncts do you use? (hypnosis, prayer, affirmations, journal keeping, therapy, OA, meddies, etc.) Prayer, of course is number one in my book. As the Bible says: " For all things I have the strength by virtue of him who imparts power to me. " I also am a firm believer in therapy. Going through the layers of fat revealed a lot about my feelings, and anger, and many things. Sort of like peeling an onion...with each layer of fat, a layer of feelings and memories and what-have-you emerged, and without therapy, I would not have made it. 16. What is your daily vitamin and mineral supplementation? Centrum clone x 1 daily Twin-Labs One (Multi) x 1 daily Calcium Citrate with boron and ipriflavones 500 mg x7 daily UpCal D ( calcium citrate powder) x 3 scoops daily in 3 of my protein shakes Vitamin C 1000 mg x 7 daily Elemental Iron (polysaccharide) X2 Milk Thistle/ Liver herbs >2000 mg x 3 daily Vitamin E (Dry) 400 mg x 3 daily Folic acid 800? mg x 4 daily B-12 sublingual X1daily Biotin x 2 daily Vitamin D-3 (Dry) x 4 daily Selenium x 2 daily Predigested whey protein 30 gms x 6-8 daily Did you want a list of my meds too? Recently I've joined Weight Watchers just to have a weekly place to weigh in and be accountable, I don't follow their eating program. 16.
