Guest guest
Is this normal? It used to be, back when I was banded shut, that I would wake up swollen, and it would go down gradually during the day. But I got my splint removed yesterday (5 weeks, 3 days!) and today I started back to work. All day long it felt like my face was swollen, and it never went down! I could tell my cheeks felt firm when I talked. Oh, and trtying to eat ANYTHING is a real chore, so I've stayed mostly on my liquid diet. Getting my mouth unwired was so anti-climatic -- I had plans to eat pizza and I couldn't even open my mouth enough to get a soup spoon in (I ended up using a teaspoon with better results to eat the clam chowder at red lobster (I planned on having pizza for dinner!) , however, I got a lot on my chin (which I still can't feel). Well, anywayy, thanks for readying my question about the swelling. It just seems worse now that I'm actually talking now. So, is that normal? Thanks, Blake

Guest guest
Hey Blake, I was never wired shut, so I don't know how much of a help this will be, but I've found that when I talk a lot during the day, or just don't get enough rest, I am more swollen at the end of the day. I never asked the doctor about it, but I am assuming that it is normal. When I went to my appointment, last Friday, I thought I would be given the o.k. to eat whatever I wanted...but was told I could eat anything as soft as, or softer than a Mcs hamburger (how that became the benchmark, I have no idea). Dispite being very disappointed, I also had plans for a pizza dinner, when I got home I found that I had trouble opening my mouth wide enough to fit real food in. It has gotten better, but I still feel like I am learning how to chew again. I have stayed on foods that I don't really have to chew, but can just go about the motions, to get back in the habit. Keep in mind, also, that you haven't used your jaw for 5 weeks...like any other joint it will get stiff if not used. Eating will get easier with time. I have noticed great improvements in using my jaw, just this week. I hope everything else is going well with your recovery. -- cosmid92671 wrote: Is this normal?
