Just an FYI guys ...

I had my panniculectomy last Friday, Feb. 14. I was also due to have a major

lateral scar revision on both thighs from childhood scars (not a thigh lift

and unrelated to WLS). When the panni was performed, the surgeon experienced

so much " oozing " that she decided against performing the scar release and my

legs were NOT done.

The reason ... abnornal " oozing " meaning too much bleeding. It became a

taxing surgery (but turned out well) because all of those little " bleeders "

kept popping up. She'd burn one, then another would pop-up, etc., etc.

My surgeon was concerned I had taken aspirin products prior to surgery, which

I assured her I had NOT. That I can't and don't, not even Vioxx. I had

listed everything on my presurgical check sheet, like multiple vitamins and

my protein shakes (which I upped, thanks Ms.

Queen-of-all-Protein-Advice " ). Everything was A-OK with the vitamins &

protein. She was very happy to see those.

The one thing that was overlooked was the MSM that I had been taking for

knees and torn rotor-cuff. It occurred to me that if MSM promotes

circulation to increase healing, that would be the " oozing " culprit,

increasing circulation, incresing blood, increasing bleeders, etc.

Threw that info my surgeon's way (showed her it was on my checksheet), and

she agreed that INDEED the MSM WAS MOST LIKELY THE CULPRIT.

So, word to the wise. Beware prior to surgery. Part of mine was scrapped,

after FIGHTING the insurance tooth and nail for it. Don't take MSM, it is my

understanding that it may increase surgical oozing or bleeders.

By the way -- came home in 23 hours and feel great. 160 staples from

hipbone-to-hipbone; pubic bone-to-breastbone, around each side of belly

button (which is now oddly off-set to the right about 1 inch). Staples come

out today, 6 days after surgery. Two drainage tubes will stay in a while and

a " bodysuit " from knees to chest (under breast, zippers on each side, open

crotch) that stays on 24/7. Apparently this stays on forever (or seems like

forever). I walked out of the hospital on my own, a little bent over, but

this, in my opinion was MUCH EASIER than my open proximal RNY on 5-11-01.

Personal note. Allow me to whine. My only scare was a severe panic attack I

had THAT I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE AND COULDN'T BREATHE that occurred in

the hospital about 5-1/2 hrs after surgery. I've never had a panic attack in

my 47 years and now have complete sympathy for anyone who lives with these.

It took 2 hours, 3 nurses, a CNA, a respiratory therapist and a police

chaplin to get me under control and convince me I wasn't dying (yes, I asked

for a police chaplin - non-religious hospital ... had to " get right with

God " ). Oh yes, and 5 mg of valium and oxygen. Oh you guys ... it was

HORRIBLE. They sent me home with 100 Xanax for future use! LOL =)

I feel great, and want to emphasize, NO MSM prior to surgery AND this surgery

was a cake walk. Continued blessings to you all.

Thanks, Dave!

You opened my eyes on a couple more " supplements " that I was taking (and had

listed on my pre-surgical checksheet)! Also, as you listed Glucosimine, I

know that's in " Pain Free " (for joints, etc.) and acts like, or is a sister

of, MSM.

Also, I was taking the Vitamin E (you listed), AND Omega 3 Fatty Acids (you

listed)!! ALL of these I had LISTED for doctor. I didn't know they thinned

blood as well, I always blamed Aspirin products, which I do NOT take anymore.

Geeze, no wonder surgeon was so SURPRISED at all the bleeders (or her

words, " oozing " ) that prevented part 2 of my surgery ... my legs. Many have

said to thank God that I had someone who cared enough NOT TO PRCEED and just

stop after tummy.

Amazing what we learn! I should have solicited our Group BEFORE surgery!

Okay brothers & sisters, we now information to have a NEW PRE-SURGICAL CHECK

SHEET on what NOT to take before surgery that will increase bleeds!

Oh well, all is well that ends well! Thanks, again, Dave!!

This is great advice. I just had a bleeder with a surgery that turned a

little thing into a big ordeal.

Things I take that I know thin blood:

Glucosamine

Vitamin E

Aspirin

Omega-3 fatty acids

The aspirin and Omega-3's are relatively new for me. I notice that I bruise

when I get a shot or a blood test now and that after a blood test, I bleed

for a little while instead of less than a minute like before.

Garlic is another one. Most garlicky foods pre-surgery are probably not

enough to significantly thin the blood, but I have had 1 anesthesiologist

tell me no garlic for a week before surgery. So, it's probably one of those

YMMV things.

According to Dr. Weil, ginger is an anti-inflammatory, and will also thin

blood.
