I am 15 months postop and have been drinking diet rootbeer for about 7 months

now. I was addicted to deit coke before surgery and was glad to be rid of the

annoying habit after surgery but my old craving got the best of me this

summer when it was soo hot out. If you can avoid getting back into the habit you

should try to forget about the soda or at least limit yourself and stick to it.

I drink about 3 a day which is better than my old habit of 8-10 a day, all

day. I have lost 140 pounds and am now currently pregnant so I have to wait to

lose remaining weight but I feel awesome now, when I lose the otehr 70-75 I will

feel like a whole new person :) Congratulations on your surgery and good luck

with everything.

I am about four weeks post op and still on a liquid diet. Before I

had the surgery I drank cafeine free diet coke all the time. I was

wondering when it would be possible of if it will be possible to

In the nutrition class we were told to forget we ever drank it. Something

about it zapping something from the bones, the actual carbonation in it. You can

let it go flat and drink it I heard but then why bother? YUK!

First off all, it's always best to ask your surgeon what he/she thinks

of this type of thing because you'll get a million different answers

from all of us. Second of all, in my personal opinion, you should not

EVER drink any carbonated beverages again after surgery because the

carbonation can expand the pouch and make it very uncomfortable for you

for a very long time as well as stretch your pouch thereby allowing you

to have more in it. You can test this by pouring some coke (or whatever)

into a ziplock freezer bag and watching what happens. Third, pour a can

of coke on your car battery and watch for a while.....do you really want

that going on in your insides?????

Its inadvisable to drink carbonated drinks at all. Most surgeons

instruct their patients to stay away from carbonation as it can

irritate the pouch, it may (unproven but possible) cause stretching

of the pouch, and it depletes your system of necessary calcium. My

surgeon said it would be okay to drink soda if it was left sitting so

the carbonation would escape, but included that it is a bad habit to

form post op as many are likely to leave " just a little more "

carbonation in their drinks as time goes by until they are drinking

fully carbonated drinks.

He also told me that the one thing common to 100% of wls failures was

the resumption of drinking soda. That is enough to keep me away from

it.

About diet sodas, or in particular sodas. I asked the doctor today what it

was in them that we shouldn't have. I thought it was just the carbonation,

but she said, and I hope I have this right " sodas have phosphates, and they

rob calcium. Stick with water, Crystal Light, and Snapple Diet. " Since I

know absolutely nothing about phosphates, and never knew they were in sodas,

I guess I'm going to have to give up the idea of going back to sodas.

Anyone else know about the problems with sodas. Guess I could go on an

on-line hunt to find out about phosphates. I always drank caffeine free, so

that wasn't an issue.

, I remember a test that I read in the mid-1970's to put a nail into a

can of Coke. If I remember right, it took 3 days or so to dissolve the

nail. Never tried it, but at the time I was totally amazed.

All this about sodas! I think I'll try Wolfie's suggestion and try to

forget about it. We'll see how my resolve goes. I did tell myself I

definitely wouldn't have any for 6 months. Maybe after that it'll be a

thing of the past? I only drank 3-4 a week, so it's not too hard of a habit

to break...mainly just convenience. I'm going to get more diet Snapple

tomorrow. Just wish it wasn't so expensive.

I've never heard that .. but suspect it is true. I personally found an

alternate for my coke habit which was excessive at the time before surgery....

which for me is now, decafinated iced tea, comes in many flavors and I keep a

HUGE bottle of it ready in the fridge for sipping.... zero cals ... and it does

the trick for me.

Habit ... you need to replace your coke habit with something you love..

period.

No more coke for meeeeee.... and hopefully no more coke for you ... ** hugs
