Hi Tralyn,

You will definitely get a million different answers here. I was told I

should avoid it because sweet drinks cause people to eat more throughout the

day,

even if the drinks are sweetened with noncaloric sweeteners. I dont know if I

believe that or not. I asked my surgeon about the whole pouch stretching

thing and he said that was ludicrous (his word, not mine) - he said that our

stomachs are made of a very firm membrane and we would burp long before it ever

stretched our pouches. But thats his opinion and I know lots of surgeons differ

from that opinion. As for me, I drink diet coke and diet pepsi vanilla

frequently. I am 7 and 1/2 months out and have never had a problem with

discomfort

caused by drinking carbonated beverages. And my calcium levels are perfect.

Personally, I had the surgery so that I would be able to lose weight. I was

unable to do so previously because I wasnt able to deny myself things I

shouldnt have (like carbonated drinks for example). My bypass wasnt brain

surgery

and I havent gained any will power from it. If I was able to say " no " to

things I shouldnt eat before surgery, I wouldnt have needed the surgery. I

wasnt

able to say no then and Im still not. Its been my experience that telling

yourself that you cant have something ever again is the fastest way to make you

crave it. Follow your surgeon and dietician's instructions as best as you can

and figure out what works best for you.

I suspect that for those who had the pouch stapled rather than sutured... the

coke might become an irritant and ultimately contribute to possible

ulceration ?? Am guessing here. My daughter just had her braces put on and

the

Dentist said she is not allowed even diet coke.

Regardless, even before surgery well meaning friends always came to me with

their advise to give up coke and caffeine in order to get a step up on weight

loss. Had anyone else been told this also??

Hi Mandy,

I gave up cokes about 1 1/2 months preop and lost approx 10 pounds. I did

nothing else different so I assume it had to have been from giving them up.

BY THE WAY..it was DIET COKES!!
