Guest guest
Have you noticed any change in the pills effectiveness? I am afraid to take antibiotics because they can make the pill less effective and my skin will get a lot worse if that happens but I would like to try clarithromycin. Anyone on this? I know someone posted recently that they had got hot flashes from the pill not working as well. Anyone have similar effects or no effects at all? Are some antibiotics better than others as far as interfering? Any info. is greatly appreciated. __________________________________________________

Guest guest
there's much disagreement about this issue (both on this board and in the medical community). My derm won't put me on the " cycline " antibiotics (tetra, mono, etc.) because he feels as if they interfere wtih the effectiveness of my birth control pills. So, he put me on e-mycin, which may be similar to clarithromycin (someone here can probably verify this). According to him, this family of antibiotics does not interfere with birth control pills. Knock on wood, I haven't gotten pregnant, and I've been taking the e-mycin for about two months! Good luck. --- wendy r wrote: > Have you noticed any change in the pills > effectiveness? Guest guest
I have read(somewhere on the net) that even mycin antiobics interfere more or less with antiobiotics. I have search PubMed for this issue before, and the bottom line seems to be that antiobitics and bcp togheter are ok. this is from the link below: " To date there have been few controlled studies and no prospective randomized trials of the effects of antibiotics on combination oral contraceptives. The literature does not specifically delineate warnings between intravenous and oral contraceptives; therefore, the same warnings would apply to both. Most of the available data do not indicate any major reduction in the efficacy of OCPs with concurrent common antibiotic use. However, these studies cannot reliably exclude a small decrease in efficacy especially in the " low-dose " (<35 µg of estrogen) combination OCPs. With several well-known resources suggesting alternative contraception during antibiotic use, pragmatically it is important to inform all female patients of the possible interaction.
