Guest guest
Im currently considering orthognathic surgery and im in the early stages of meeting my orthodontist and surgeon. I am going to ask my surgeon this, but my next appointment has been delayed for another month so i thought Id ask you guys first. How can the surgery affect someones smile? I do not have a gummy smile but i absolutely hate the way my smile looks, when I was younger i had a normal very nice smile but over the last few years it has become horrible. I believe it could well be as a result of abnormal jaw development. What i'd like to know is whether or not surgery will correct it? would the surgery take me back to the natural nice smile i had as a child, or will it make little or no difference? Ive become so insecure about my smile that whenever i laugh or smile i try to cover up my face with my hand or something which probably looks even more rediculous. I would definately go through with orthognathic surgery to correct this, because its really having an impact on parts of my life and how i interact with people. Thanks,

Guest guest
Yes, it definitely can affect your smile, although I don't think it changed mine much. And yes, do ask your surgeon. In what way " horrible " ? (Personally, I've never seen a horrible smile, although I've seen teeth that needed fixing, from decay and from misalignment. But if you feel it is horrible, then it's worth addressing directly with your ortho and surgeon, I think.) And certainly, depending on what you need to have done, how it's done, and how you respond to the surgery, there can be a period of feeling " stiff " or " tight. " That's generally temporary, though. Guest guest
Well the simple test that leads me to hate my smile is the fact that when most people smile they look better, they just look the same but happier. But my smile however totally changes the way i look and my chin kind of sticks out, and my nostrils seem to almost flare up, quite simply something isnt right, as if my muscles or skin dont fit the bone structure. Being generally insecure these days would suggest that maybe im imagining it however when i look at photos from a few years back my smile was fine, just like everyones. I believe I am looking at this objectively and simply i have a terrible smile which I am fed up with it and will do anything to get it sorted out.
