I know the " be gentle on me " thing :) The way it was explained to me is

that there are certain carbs that are NOT digestible. The manufacturer

didn't used to have to include these in the carb count. But then it was

discovered that there is an extremely small percentage of the population

that seems to be able to make use of the carbs. Now they separate the carbs

on the package to separate the " usable " or net carbs from the " total "

carbs.....usable or not. Personally I go by the net carbs. HTH, P.

Joan,

I have also found this rather confusing. According to the old

labels, if you calculated the protein calories, carb calories, and fat

calories it often did not add up to the total caloric intake of many

products. Since the remaining calories did not do what the protein did

for our bodies and they really weren't fat either, the new labels now

include the calories in with the carbs. This way you can actually see

where all the calories are coming from (as if I really wanted to know.)

It is my understanding that the effective carbs are what we need to look

at (this is what was on the old labels). Clear as mud? Hope this helps

some.
