My story is slightly different, but I ended up " out-of-network " on my

insurance and didn't know until 2 weeks pre-op. My surgery was

approved by Blue Cross/Blue Shield, so they agreed to pay the OS the

out-of-network amount instead of the full. My share of the total OS

bill was $1247.

With only 2 weeks to go, and knowing that the OS I'd been seeing is

the best in town, I decided to suck it up and finance the balance and

go ahead with surgery.

Depending on how much you like/trust your OS, you may want to consider

doing something like I did.

Hope this helps!

Wow, , that is such a drag. I don't know if you have any

recourse though. If your surgery had been scheduled and then they

dropped Cigna, absolutely.

I would meet with the new OS your ortho recommended. You never know --

he or she could be even better.

insurance co's suck-period.

I have vytra-and they in writing approved my upper/lower and genio

in 2 lettersw and numerous calls...lesws than 2 wks pre-op, they

changed thier minds on genio and yanked the approval for genio--

$4000.

I was like what-the?

Wrote about it, and I can appeal, which I will oncwe I know they

paid all the bills they should have...but will prob loose, they may

have messed up as most pep do not have this part approved, but they

wrote it and 3 reps agreed with it and 2 weeks for $4ooo!!!!!!

unreal.

So good thing is that maybe the more helpful part is that you lost

an OS who's staff were not that concerned with your situation and

didn't communicate well. Now you have a chance to work with one

committed to your success. (ps-my ins os person worked on this w/me)

so anyway-good luck, write a letter noting your bad-taste with teh

BBB and feel good, you are still on your way!!!! :) JO

Nope, thank heavens, that did not happen to me.

I will tell you, however, that I know of at least one woman in this

area who chosen another surgeon over my beloved one, and was quite

happy with her results. I know of at least two more who were

scheduled with another surgeon altogether, and seem to be doing well.

If you have " special " problems -- like jaws that are already in

trouble, very large movements, very complex situations, I'd ask my

ortho to think again about who's best, and maybe do some asking on

your own about a specific name and area here, preferably for answers

in e-mail. (Nope. We do not want to do offense to anybody's rep, and

even the most famous and best docs can have a personality clash, or

just a case that does not go well.)

And yes, I do know that my situation, while apparently very simple to

resolve and done with great ease and skill, was indeed most " special "

to me!!!

If you have any sense of a problem with a new surgeon, a personality

clash, a sense of his or her uncertainty -- back off and rethink, and

get more consultations!

Did you actually send in the request for surgery to Cigna..or were

you just assuming that since your OS was on the list of covered

doctors that they would cover it. I know that your doctor is no

longer even on the list. But you must get your actual procedure

approved through your insurance company. For instance, I have Aetna.

My OS is on my list. But the OS still had to submit a claim to get

the procedure approved. It didnt sound from your post that you had

even started this process and were already gonna set up a date for

surgery. My procedure took about 2 months to get approved even

though my OS was on our insurance list. But anyways...hope all goes

well with your new surgeon. I am in the process of switching

orthodontists now before i get my braces put on.

Thank you to everyone that responded to my question. I went ahead

and saw my original OS to get his opinion on my progress. I was able

to talk face to face with the person who handles getting insurance

coverage taken care of. It was so much easier to understand the

process when you are actually sitting face to face with someone. I

freely admit I hate talking on the phone.

It turns out that my OS is in my " out of network " providers and Cigna

will pay 80% of the surgeons fees. Much like it happened to Jen, the

only out of pocket expense will be the out of network copay and the

20% remainder of the surgeons payment. All I am waiting for now is a

call from my OS to let me know what date my surgery will be on. I am

soooooooo happy with how this turned out because I feel I am in very

capable hands and would rather pay a little and have peace of mind.

I will be having my upper jaw moved forward at least 2mm and also

raised (gummy smile). When I asked him about being wired he said he

hadn't done that in over ten years lol. The only thing I may have is

a splint wired to my upper braces to keep the jaw in place while I

heal.

Even as a lurker you all have given me a place to educate myself on

what to expect and to me knowledge is power. I will be a bit more

vocal now that I am getting closer to the actual event. The first

call I make after I hear from my surgeon .... is to my mom cause she

is going to come and help take care of me. I may be 31 but nobody

can baby you like mom can. :)

Thanks again,

  • 2 weeks later...

I too have Aetna. Could you tell me about the process of getting your surgery

covered? I

have a class 3 underbite and they are going to be doing the upper jaw

proceedure.

You can e-mail me at scottfly27atgmail(dot).com

covered? I

have a class 3 underbite and they are going to be doing the upper jaw

proceedure.

You can e-mail me at scottfly27atgmail(dot).com
