Hey everybody! Sorry I haven't posted on here in a while. I had to

go back to work and get into my normal busy routines. Then, I had a

job change and had to move. It's all been great though. :)

I can't believe that my surgery was almost 8 months ago. Those first

four months were kind of tough on me because I couldn't seem to get

myself into my normal activities, and it was wearing me down. After

those four months were over, I began to feel more like myself.

That's when I had to go out on a new job search, and thank heavens I

am finally teaching first grade. It's so wonderful.

OK, sorry, I know I need to be typing about my jaw. Well, I haven't

had any problems with my jaw at all. It's like I never had the

surgery at all sometimes. I still have some numbness in my upper

gums, but it hasn't affected my taste or eating. I haven't seen my

surgeon in a while so I haven't been able to ask him about it.

I got my braces off last month! It has been so great to not have

them anymore, but those retainers are a pain. I really don't like

them, and they are just so uncomfortable to me. I have to wear them

16 hours a day until my ortho says different. Do I have to wear them

forever???

For all of you who are about to have surgery or have already had it,

I just want to say, " Hang in there. " Things will get better. Those

first few months can be tough, but before you know it-- you'll be on

the happy side. I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers for a

smooth and quick recovery. Best wishes to everyone!!

Hi ,

Retention is the most important aspect of this whole process, I

think. If your ortho says wear the retainer for 16 hours a day, then

I would do it (and even more if you can manage it). Just make sure

you keep tabs on your teeth moving, and let your ortho know right

away if they do.

Mine didn't quite stay where the ortho thought they would post-op, I

had an upper tooth that was starting to turn despite wearing my

removeable retainer for most of the day & night. He replaced that

with a fixed wire retainer, so things are stable now. I don't mind

the wire retainer although at the time I thought I had

failed " Removeable Retainers 101 " : <

I'm sure you don't want to have to go back to braces again, so I'd

follow the ortho's orders and see where you are after a year or so.

If things have remained stable, he might say you can step it down a

bit and just wear it at night, eventually not needing it at all.

I still remember Kat_UK's ortho's advice " You can remove it for

special occasions " : )
