Guest guest
Hi all, just back from the OR and we're talking about taking the braces off. I am excited but scared too... He is very anxious to keep things moving to avoid additional decay and staining on my teeth. The plan is to get a permanent splint on the inside of my front lower teeth to help support them...have to do a consult with the DDS about it. Anyone ever had this done and since it's not cosmetic, did your insurance allow it? or was it all out of pocket? Once that is done I have to decide on what way I will make this smile glow-bright-white. I hear laminates are the way to go,but holy cow...pricey! He's heard 800-1500$ PER TOOTH!! no kidding. of course not covered at all too. Second question to anyone who's done this is how long did you have to wait between getting the braces off and getting the laminates...I have heard 3 wks to several mths...that's a bummer, I mean sounds necessary but a bummer...they are going to look Worse before better for sure. And lastly, did anyones teeth move A LOT after getting the braces off...he says to expect a lot of " settling " but tht they won't go back to what they were (of course I will have a retainer-but I am known for working hard to get things straight...and then my body says NOPE, moving on back. I know it can't be what it was before bec of the surgery, but I am still concerned that things will alter a lot... Anyone got the scoop for me? Thanks, JO

Guest guest
That " permanent splint " sounds a lot like the wire permanent retainer. If that's what it is, a lot of people have them, glued in, behind their lower and/or upper teeth. I don't, but many folks do. It's my impression that most get them from the ortho, and it's covered in the fee, but I'm not your best source on that. I have some of the yellowest teeth on earth, alas, at least this side of those who smoke. Once a crown had to be sent back three times to get it dark enough. Everybody wanted me to spring for laminates or veneers, but my pocketbook said no. There is a chance that someday they will be covered by insurance because most of my front teeth are pretty much held together by composite fillings. Until then, I made do with whitening, by Opalescence, given me by my sweet general dentist. It did pretty well. My teeth haven't moved a lot, but I'm pretty religious still, at two years plus out from surgery and two years out from removal of appliances, about wearing the retainers (I have the acryllic ones, clear, that look a lot like Invisalign) at least 14 hours a day, as instructed.
