Last time I saw my PCM we talked about the protein issue. I was telling him

about how we were all being told different number of grams per day needed

and he said he would mail me an article that was in the Journal of Medicine

that would explain it better to me. I had forgotten about it but it arrived

today. It's four pages long so I am not even going to type it out but here

is the point that I believe explains why we keep hearing different numbers.

This information comes from Stanford Hospital-Department of Nutritional

Medicine.

The average American requires 0.36 grams of high quality protein (such as

chicken, fish, tofu and legumes) per pound of body weight. This amount is

necessary to maintain lean muscle mass and avoid " muscle wasting " . An

extremely active person or an " athlete " needs additional protein (also high

quality) and should strive to take in quantities equal to 0.43 grams per

pound of body weight.

So I guess depending on your body weight the amount of protein needed per

day should be different for each of us.
