Guest guest
Surgery does not make your hair fall out. Rapid weight loss due to loss of protein in your system does. Any time you go on a diet that makes you lose weight rapidly, you'll end up losing some hair. Unfortunately, because surgery makes you lose faster, the hair falls out more easily. There are ways to remedy that by using either Biotin or Nioxin shampoos and you can buy hair and nail vitamins at your local drug store or Wal Mart. It helps...but the hair loss is NOT preventable. On the upside.....the hair on your legs and various other places grows back finer than it was before and slower so you don't have to shave as often..... T. Guest guest
Oh you better believe it happens to lots of people. I think (I hope this is right?) that it is because we are nutritionally and protein challenged. Seems like the majority have problems but some people do escape it. My doc told me there was little that could be done about it but that it would go on for about 6 months and then it would slow down...then stop...then go back to normal. I am praying he is right. Guest guest
I lost mine, too. I was about 6months out when it happened to me. I made a concerted effort to increase my protein intake and that made the difference. It will come back, even thicker than before. Just keep an eye on your protein. My episode only lasted about 3 weeeks and it was not noticable to anyone but me! You will be ok. I was told this is completely normal. > Ok I am 4 months out. Guest guest
Hi Candi, I am just over 3 months post op and I too am losing my hair. I have to clean the drain in the shower daily. I use a shampoo called Nioxin. It is suppose to help and I am assuming that if I was not using it that I would be losing more. Thank goodness they said this should stop at about 6 months post op. It is my understanding that you should NOT perm or color your hair until it stops falling out and starts to grow back. I would definately wait. Where do you get the biotin? Guest guest
Candy, avoid the perm for a few more weeks. The rolling and pulling will help to pull more hair out and right now, you don't want to do that right now. I begain this stage around 4 month's and stopped around 7. My hair is on the long side and so now it's thin as heck but I kept it pulled back in a soft scrunchy most of the time to avoid it falling into food, and all over the house, car and general anywhere. I avoided washing frequently, blowdry and curling iron. I avoided anything that would pull, tug, bend or break my hair to preserve it and it worked! I've suggested this before and it has worked for many others. I was going to perm my hair also, but was suggested to avoid perm by my hairdresser who i've entrusted for over 10 years. Color I did do upon the onset, and it didn't cause a problem. I hope this helps, Desperate for Hair Help Ok I am 4 months out. I have been taking the Biotin that was suggested to help prevent hair loss. Either it's not working or I suppose it could be working and I am losing less than I would have been otherwise. Guest guest
I am 5 months post op and losing hair also. For a whole month it has been coming out like crazy. Now, I have started overloading on protein, and it is helping. It isn't falling out as fast or in handfuls anymore.
