Guest guest
Hello All, I have been seeing some blood drives going on and was thinking of going to donate, but my mom who just had the surgery said her surgeon said we can never donate blood again? Is that true? What about plasma? Thanks for any info regarding this. ~~Chandra

Guest guest
Chandra, this is not true. The biggest factor is whether or not you are anemic. If you are, you shouldn't donate. I had a hernia repair several years after my WLS (not WLS related), and I donated my own blood a week before my surgery, so it would be available if needed. No side effects. I know a number of other people here who have done the same thing. I'd be donating now, except I've had hepatitis, and they won't take my blood anymore. I know the amount of blood drawn when they do my labs would keep a vampire happy for a year! So, why not a donation? I just wouldn't do it within several weeks of having labs drawn. Guest guest
My surgeon told us before surgery that we should not donate blood ever again. This is because he considers all gastric bypass patients to be at higher risk for some things. I'm not sure what we are at higher risk for. He also tells us to get flu shots every year. From my own experience, I find that I very seldom get sick since surgery (must be all that good nutrition), but if I do get sick, and I can't eat or drink or take vitamins, it only takes a few days before I feel awful. It seems to take me longer to recover than before, once I get sick. Once my protein level goes down, it can take months to get it up again. BTW, everyone in my family has caught a 24 hour flu that is going around in our area. So far, I'm fine. Guest guest
I donated blood once post-op (right after 9/11) and my iron had been in the toilet ever since. It's finally above the bottom of the " normal " range, but just barely. Some surgeons say it's okay to donate, others are adamantly against it because it can be very difficult for us to rebuild our iron stores. ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.comR http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune!
