Guest guest
Hi, Bridget - This may be one of the things that you don't worry about what your surgeon says, and do your own research. <<Hello , I am interested in hearing the recipes for protein shakes too. The one thing my dr has said is that you don't want to become dependent on them>> I am " totally dependent " on protein shakes, as I am on eating food, breathing, etc. My doc, who's done over 4000 surgeries in the last 16 years, mandates them. 120 grams of protein from shakes per day for distal patients. 90/day for proximals. << and to remember that liquid goes through you faster. >> Maybe he doesn't understand how this surgery actually works? Yes, liquids go thru the pouch faster, but nothing is absorbed in the pouch, anyway. liquids *don't* go thru the bowel faster now, nor do they zoom thru us *before* surgery. <<I would think if you add fruit or even the fiber from protein would make it stay in your pouch longer?>> Protein shakes provide satiety that has nothing to do with staying in pouch. And I recommend *against* adding anything like fruit, milk, or fiber to shakes. Fruit and milk are sugars that will hinder weight loss. Fiber absorbs liquid, IMO will absorb protein, and the protein must then be digested. Part of the reason for doing protein shakes is that they don't need to be digested. << I'm going to talk to my nutrionist about this at my next appt. I know I've heard great things about the premade Atkins shakes so I hope I get the green light from my nutrionist to try those. Thanks! Bridget Northam>> Please go to VitaLady.com. Read her website. Atkins shakes are pricy, and not as bioavailable (don't they have soy?) Whey is the best kind, and VitaLady carries only things that are good for us. She are us. (9 yuears post-op).
