He ,

Which program are you going to? I am through Richmond and just had my appt with the surgeon. It's good that you are already well read. The scariest thing for me was the psych appt. But that went easily. She liked it that I was already going to support group meetings, so you might want to consider that. All the programs are different I've heard. But for me, I was approved in September, had my first meeting on October and if I have lost the 10% by my next weigh in on May 3rd I will get a surgery date. So, 6 months so far, but they seem to have gone by really fast.

Good luck in your journey,

Pam

Hi everyone out there, my name is and I've just begun the process. Any advice for a novice? I have appts for first psych eval and nutrition. I've read lots on the whole g/b surgery, but would like some idea of a time frame. I am really excited but patience is not my long suit. I know I am in for a long hall, but I just want to know all I can to be as prepared as I can be.

Hi Pam, I assme I will go to Richmond, but I think SF is a possibility. I was told I did not have a choice that Kaiser would make that call. Yes, I plan on attending a g/b support grp here in Modesto tonight I think. It is not a Kaiser grp but I don't think it matters. I am concerned with the time it will take to lose the 10%. I'm sure that is the hardest part. Let's face it that is the problem! DUH!!! Thanks for responding. Where are you located? Keep me posted on your progress. azurewinds@... wrote: He , Which program are you going to? I am through Richmond and just had my appt with the surgeon. It's good that you are already well

Hi Pam, Thanks for responding. I am so excitred I can hardley contain it. Why else would I be up at midnight?!!I am looking forward to being healthy and having enough energy to chase my wonderful, skinny husband around. I am praying for a quick turnaround. Patience is not what I am good at. I am concerned about the weight loss of 10%. If I can successfully lose nearly 30 lbs, and quickly, I will be okay. Why do they require that ? I am a pretty straight forward person, so I respect and require honesty from people even if it isn't what I want to hear. Thank you for your encouragement. Hi ,

I'm in Sacramento and I've been going to the Elk Grove support groups because they fit my work schedule better than the Sacramento ones.

It might help with the 10 percent if you remind yourself that you are only going to be dieting for a short time. For me in the past, I've done ok at first but knowing that I would have to keep the diet up for two years to lose all my weight was so discouraging that eventually gave up. I don't know if it will work for you but what I did was to follow the diet to a T and NOT weigh myself weekly. I only weighed when I went to Kaiser once a month. That way I didn't risk slacking off if I had a good week, which has also been my pattern in the past.

If it takes awhile, it's not a bad thing because you are learning the skills you need later. I have a co-worker who did not go through Kaiser. They did not put her on the pre-op diet and didn't give her near the information we are getting. She is struggling now with adapting to her pouch. Talking with her and sharing my binder with her has given me a new appreciation for Kaiser's program.

Hi , it's the other Pam :)

I felt the same way about the 10 percent and then I saw the picture of a liver before and after the 10 percent. Big difference in size. They have to move the liver away to get to your stomach. Also losing some fat makes more room for the instruments.

I am looking forward to running too. I do lots of Dog sports with my shelties but we haven't been able to do agility which they love because I can't run.

The 10% loss from my understanding (Veterans chime in

at any time) helps make the surgery easy for the

surgeons (makes it easy for them to manuever on the

inside because your organs are larger the heavier a

person is) and it makes recovery better for you.

Also, its about putting into practice a different way

of eating prior to surgery because it is a lot like

the way you will be eating post surgery.

I also like to think that it is also a way or a last

ditch effort to show them that you are dedicated but I

could be wrong about this.

I am happy for you and I really hope that everything

will go smooth for you. Stick around. There are a

lot of great people here.

Hi, Pam, That's great advice on the 10%. I think I will do that. I'm waiting for my psych and nutrition appts. I am very impatient and like to know how long etc. But, I guess I will just have to settle down and let it all take it's course. Is it the Atkins or SouthBeach what they want you to follow pre-op? I am familiar with both of those. What did you do? How much did you have to lose pre-op and how long did it take you? When did you have surgery and how much have you lost? I'm just full of all kinds of questions. I'm a retired teacher and I love to learn about new things so I want to learn everything I can. I know it is for my best to do all I need to do to have a better success. It still doesn't help my impatience. I just have to keep telling myself to relax. And I pray a lot. Thanks for your advice.azurewinds@... wrote: Hi , I'm in Sacramento and I've been going to the Elk Grove support groups because they fit my work schedule better than the Sacramento ones.
