Guest guest
Not meaning to be difficult, but honestly, there's no one answer for these " how long? " questions... How long swelling? How long numbness? How long pins-and-needles? ... Or rather, there is only one answer: It will take as long as it takes. Everybody is different. And yes, there have been others who have had numb tongues. Some have had complete return of sensation. Some have had partial return of sensation. Some are still waiting. It doesn't help, of course, that the " how long? " questions are at the top of everyone's list. It's completely usual and normal to be eager, frustrated and in a hurry to get back to where one was before, at least with regard to these problems. Your doc is probably your best source of information and advice on these matters. He or she knows what he or she did, and where the work was done. Guest guest
I'll be six months on Decembre the 2nd (next Thursday) and half of my tongue is still completely (99.9%) numb. As well as my upper gums and teeth. Eating was difficult, but your body will adapt. It's in the Human Nature to adapt. I was told it could take 2 years to fully return, if it does happen. So I'm still hoping it will, and only 18 months for full recovery! Sounds silly, but I've waited 37 years to get a functional bite. I might as well wait 18 months longer to get it perfect And I agree with Cammie, only your doctor knows best. The best information you'll get, he or she will provide. Guest guest
Well, My surgery was just Nov. 15th, and at first I could not feel my tongue, my chin, my lips, and part of my cheeks were numb. It has only been two weeks and I have regained feeling in my cheeks, my top lip, part of my bottom lip, and half of my tongue. I was told that first, it will feel numb, then it will " tingle " then that will be followed by " pins and needles " . My surgeon told me that the pins and needles should be a sign to me that the feeling will come back, so I am just happy with the pins and needles I have in the rest of the lower lip and right side of my tongue. My chin was completely numb up until a couple days ago, and now it will " tingle " every once in a while, so hopefully my feeling is on it's way back there too. Every body is different, and that is the hard thing with this surgery. A lot of different possibilites have to be considered, such as how close to the nerve were the screws placed in your jaw? Best of luck to you! I MIGHT get to start eating soft foods in two days...I am SO excited..I cant stand it! Rocki

Guest guest
Hey Drew, I am a little over 5 months and the left side of my tongue is still significantly numb, as are my gums and roof of mouth. i have pins and needles on the numb side, some days worse than others, which gives me hope, but it;s still pretty numb. i started taking B- 12 on the recommendation of someone on the sight and i feel pretty good about it. (for circulation and nerve health). I bite my tongue often, that is the worst part. i still have a hard time eating certain things, like tough meats (pork chops, steak) or salad. hard to maneuver all that lettuce around with a numb tongue. other than that, eating is fine. best, > > Well this will be my first post, however I've read who knows how many > since my surgery (Nov. 18th) to try to keep me sane, knowing that > others are experiencing or have experienced the same kind of thing I'm > going through.
