I used to go to Slender Lady which is very like Curves, same

machines, same type of program. I went for almost three years. I am

now weight training at another gym but.........if it hadn't been for

Slender Lady I would have NEVER in a million thought of joining a

gym. I think that these types of gyms are invaluable for those of us

who have never been to a gym and wouldn't even think of it if there

are going to be lean, beautiful, buff, young, tan, blah, blah, people

standing around looking wonderful and here we are, never having

exercised in our lives, overweight (in my case M.O.- I started a year

before surgery) and out of shape. Go for it! It's fun, you may meet

some interesting women, and begin to get into shape. I met my work

out buddy there and we've been working out together for about three

years. We keep each other moving and honest. After a while if you

feel that your body just isn't being challenged enough, join another

gym. The price is right- most gym's are about $30.00 a month and it

can't hurt you as long as you don't sign a long term contract.

Amber -

I prepaid for one year at our local Curves, 5 months postop open proximal

RNY. It was great for me in the beginning, and was good for 8 months. I

must admit, it was the only way I could have STARTED excercising.

Unfortunately, I quickly got extremely board with the routine (after the

initial 3 months) and persevered for 5 more months (board, but persevered).

I started in October '01 and stopped going in June '02. I felt better going,

just exercising, but in June '02, my doctor said I had outgrown the Curves

routine and needed more. Also, my doctor suggested if I continued with

Curves, that I should supplement it with 45 minutes hard walking daily and

weight training every other day. At this point, I started looking for a

trainer, did a LOT of walking/biking/swimming on my own (summer in Alaska,

easily done), and discontinued Curves.

Also, the Curves personnel here in Anchorage, in my opinion, are not much

more than front desk clerks. I would not say they are very knowledgeable in

the way of fittness or training. That was quite disappointing. I would

not trust their judgment.

Another word of caution -- I developed a serious case of right shoulder

rotorcuff tendonitis AS WELL AS tendonditis of the right elbow which my

doctor AND physical therapist directly was related to my Curves workout.

VERY PAINFUL!! PT said there is a piece of equiptment there (at Curves) that

my PT has had MORE clients than she can count, that have come to her with

shoulder/arm/elbow tendonitis ALL linked to their Curves experience. The

common denominator of all the patients was Curves. Huummmm.

So, word to the wise! I paid a lot to Curves, admitedly it was helpful for a

time, got me motivated, BUT I am still paying for it to this day with the

tendonitis. I just let it go as a life experience, but they need to train

their people better to train their clients what to do or NOT to do with the

equipment. (When I went here in Anchorage, a lot of the young girls just

read their magazines behind the counter. I'd ask for help, sometimes, but

felt their answers were pretty vague. So ...)

Good luck with your decision. My experience may differ from others.

Ditto for me (as expressed in my previous post on this subject). Rotor-cuff

problems, inexperienced/unqualified personnel ... you said it. Got me going

initially, but using their services came to a problematic/painful conclusion.

Buyer beware or stay informed.
