Guest guest
Hi. I am 18 years old and just started college. Braces is also the part i am dreading the most but I want the surgery for a lot of appearance reasons also. So b/c of that, I am going to deal with the braces for a year if I will look much better for the rest of my life. Also, I am planning on getting clear braces put on (not the invisalign stuff, just clear brackets). My current surgeon said it should be fine as long as they are strong enough. and my current orthodontist said that they should be strong enough. So even though they cost a tad more, Its better then having a mouth full of metal that really stands out (especially in my case cause i have an overbite and my front teeth show 24/7 right now....) Hope this helps! > Hello Everyone! > > Im seriously thinking about having my lower jaw set back. Everytime > i look in the mirror i feel ugly and depressed. Guest guest
I feel your pain about wearing braces. I'm 22 and really REALLY didn't want braces at all but I knew that I needed the surgery to fix my overbite. I have the invisalign braces right now. I'm about a month in them and I love them!!! No one notices them unless I tell them I have them on. A couple of weeks before the surgery I'll have the clear ceramic braces put on (like sweetpearl) and will have those on for about 6 months after surgery. For me the invisaligns were the best option because I'd wear them for majority of the treatment (15 months) and only have the regular braces for 6 months. Call me vain if you want but this just helps me sleep better at night. > > Hello Everyone! > > > > Im seriously thinking about having my lower jaw set back. > Everytime > > i look in the mirror i feel ugly and depressed. Guest guest
Baybees-ohh. Braces are no big deal. Honest. They may cause you some pain, but not if you're lucky. They may scratch up your mouth -- but wax will tend to that. And honestly, nobody else is gonna care. Almost everybody in the U.S., anyhow, has seen mouthfuls of hardware and doesn't really give a hoot -- unless they wanna fix their own mouths and want to know how it feels. It really is not that bad. I'm not saying that I'd rather have them in than out, but I think you won't find them as troublesome as you're expecting. Truly. I've done it twice now, and I'm a real, REAL wimp! cammie

Guest guest
Hi ! I have almost exactly the same situation as you! I just turned 19 years old this summer, entering second year of university. I'm getting braces tomorrow!! I'm kind of scared, but I'm glad that I'm getting it over with now, rather than when I'm 30, for example. I have an underbite, and the surgery will consist of lower jaw setback (I don't know the exact terms). I am getting ceramic clear braces, on the top, and regular metal braces for the bottom. I do think that braces will make things awkward for a while, such as talking, eating in public..and I'm starting school next week. But it is generally a short period of discomfort in exchange for having perfect teeth for the rest of your life! Good luck, and let me know how it goes.. Guest guest
Mandy/. I am 33 years old and have had my braces, clear brackets on top and soon to get metal lowers for about 4 months now. I was nervous about what people would say too, especially at work - I was not worried about friend. My experience has been that people ask you about them out of curiousity or because they think they need them. I have had no negativity at all. It may be different at university to being at work. My friend said to me to not try to hide them and prompt people to think you are embarassed, smile even more and pretend like you don't have them or be the first to find that opening to mention that you have them. Most people won't say anything as it is no big deal to them because braces are not unusual to have. I hope this is what you find also. As for wearing them pain and discomfort wise, I couldn't chew for about 2 months when I got them my teeth were sore but I'm talking only when I tried to chew. Now I am eating apples and not a worry. The inside of my mouth gets sore at times when the braces rub but get a good ulcer type medicine and it usually clears up overnight. I am surprised that I haven't found them too bad at all, just a loooong process. Hope this helps, Suzy mandy_1332 <no_reply > wrote: Hi ! I have almost exactly the same situation as you! Guest guest
Mandy/: There is a book called " How to survive orthognathic surgery " . It covers all the aspects of the surgery. I think most of your questions will be answered in the book. Here is the link to the website of the book. You can browse the " table of content " of the book. www.orthognathic.com I had surgery 2 months back & this book was tremendously helpful. Good luck!!
