Guest guest
Hello every one, I had open RNY on Nov. 21. I got an infection in my incision at about 3 weeks out. It looked like it was starting to get better the Monday before xmas. The next day I left my home town in Dayton Ohio to go to Baltimore Md to spend time with my family. Well that day the incision area started to get a little red like it had the weekend before I went to the Dr. Another bump appeared that looked like it would be another pus pocket that was like the first one that made me acknowledge the infection. This place continued to look like it would break open. On xmas eve boy did it. It had so much pressure it opened and caused projectile pus to shoot out of me. Talk about gross!! It took four bath towels to contain the infection as we went to the E.R. I was packed that day and told to return to the urgent care on Saturday. I was repacked then. I returned home on Sunday and saw my surgeon on Monday. I developed a second opening in the insicion this opening was not very deep. My surgeon had a home health nurse assigned to me to come and change the packing daily. The second hole has become as deep as the first which is a good five inches. It has also joined it. I also developed a pain in my fat roll on saturday and it seems like this is another abcess a good six inches under the incision. There was also an odor today that the nurse thought could be serious and she even called and talked to the doc that was on call for my surgeon. I am to go back tomarrow. I have been on antibiotics for three weeks. I am getting really freaked out by this infection. It was orgianlly diagnoised as a staph infection. It doesn't seem to be getting better. I thought I would be back to work Jan 2. I also thought that I be able to start riding my horse again in prep for show season. But I can hardly walk with the pain from this seemingly third abcess. I also am concerned that I can eat too much. I am able to eat like three chicken nuggets or2 pieces of lunch meat and 2 pieces of cheese. I have lost 35 pounds, but the last week it has really slowed. I haven't been doing too well with my water though so that might be part of the problem and I went out to eat a couple of times and washed my meals down and ate quite a bit! I have been a little lass on my protein supplements as well, but I got back on them today. Am I eating too much? Have I lost enough for this point? I am sure it will pick up when I can actually exercise more!! Does anyone have an experience with this type of infection?? I need your help guys!! Thanks for listening Mindy

Guest guest
Mindy, well I never had any infections, but it sounds like you are getting it all taken care of. As for losing weight, it is really a personal thing, everyone loses different amounts and also we lose it in different areas. My tends to come off in waves, like I lose from my face down to my legs(in that order), also keep in mind that while you may not be losing according to the scale, you could still be losing inches, so consult your tape measure. As for eating too much, that also is based on the person and it depends on what you are eating. I am 3 months out and as an example I can eat half a container of yogurt(in about 30 minutes), and like 4 crackers with 2 pieces of cheese(made into little sandwiches) for lunch, and for dinner usually about 2 ounces of chicken and about 2 bites of a veggie, but then again there are days when I can eat more. I do know that eating and drinking is a BIG no, no! I am very strict with myself about that. I stop 30 minutes before eating and wait till an hour after. I got a good tip the other day with regard to feeling some thirst while eating, is to have a tomatoe(or other things that are kinda juicy)...I choose lemons and just take a little suck on one once I am finished eating and it makes it easier to withstand that hour of not drinking anything. When you wash the food away too soon, you lose vital vitamins and nutrients(is my understanding). Anyway, I hope this helps and hang in there!!! Guest guest
Mindy, I felt sad while reading about the challenges that you are having to go toe to toe with, this, in addition to the regular shifts that take place after WLS. Am glad that you are getting the medical care you need .... will add to this my prayers for the healing ....
