Guest guest
Hi everyone, I had surgery for an open bite in May, and I'm due to get my braces off in November (YAYYY!!!) I am curious (for those of you out of braces now) which type of retainer you have. I would eventually like to get permanent retainers on so that I don't have to worry about wearing one at night, but I will not consider getting just a permanent one right away since they typically only go on the first 4-6 teeth. I don't think my ortho would do that anyway. But he is willing to go either the metal wire or clear invisalign type route. I personally would rather the clear just because I know myself and I feel as though I'd be more faithful in wearing it 24/7. However, I know several people who wore the clear ones and now several years later need braces put back on (whether they wore them faithfully though, I am not sure) Anywho, just curious about your own personal experiences with which type you chose, any stories about other people you know, etc. Thanks a lot! Guest guest
Hi, I had surgery in May for an open bite. I have been wearing an essix retainer on my top teeth for almost 2 months. For the first ten days I had to wear it 24/7. Now I just wear it at night - although sometimes I pop it on in the day also - I don't have to I'm just being extra cautious! On the bottom I have a fixed reatiner which I've had on for about 4 weeks. Its really comfortable & I don't have to go back to the orthodontist now for another 11 months - yippee!!! I would just go with what your orthodontist suggests - they are the experts. One thing I would recommend is retainer brite & a sonic cleaner if you have any kind of removable retainers. It just makes them easier to clean. Good Luck, . > Hi everyone, > > I had surgery for an open bite in May, and I'm due to get my braces > off in November (YAYYY!!!) > > I am curious (for those of you out of braces now) which type of > retainer you have. Guest guest
Okay thanks , I'm crossing my fingers he'll give me an essix retainer too, but of course I'll do what he thinks is best. Thanks again, Kirstin > > Hi everyone, > > > > I had surgery for an open bite in May, and I'm due to get my > braces > > off in November (YAYYY!!!) > > > > I am curious (for those of you out of braces now) which type of > > retainer you have. Guest guest
Hi, You won't know me, because I had my surgery a while back, but I popped in to say " hi " today and your post jumped out at me. My orthodontist will not use invisalign retainers on patients who have had surgery to correct an open bite. His feeling is that anything that comes between the teeth is bad news, meaning could possibly contribute to a reopening of the bite. Stick with the regular, old- fashioned retainers if you get a choice. You'll remember to wear them. I still wear mine every night, three years post-op. Good luck, Cheryl
