hi everyone i am new. i am supposed to have my surgery in december

during winter break. from my understanding the surgeon is going to

push my lower jaw back and my upper jaw forward. they will also need

to take a bone graft from my hip. i have no problems with the way i

look now. i want to have the surgery done because i have intense

migrains that i believe are from my bite. i also bite on my cheecks

and tongue while eating and its really annoying. i have basically made

up my mind about having the surgery done. i want to know if there is

anyone who has had the surgery done a long time ago (5+ years) and how

it turned out in the long term. i heard that the jaws may shift back

to original position and such. how common is that? i also wanted to

know if anyone had a bone graft taken ... what was your experiences

with that. i am relatively young (19) and i am not worried about pain

right after surgery. i have a lot of people to help me. please let me

know what you all think.

Hi Holly, and welcome aboard!

There are not a lot of people who have had surgery that long ago who

still come and post. I think a member called bedbug is the only one I

can recall who hit the 5 year mark this year, but I can't recall what

she had done. You could try searching the archives on her name (it is

tedious, but keep trying, you'll find her somewhere in the last 3 or

4 months, I'm sure).

I myself am celebrating my 2nd year post-op today, from

upper/lower/genio, although my surgery was to advance the lower and

impact the upper (and give it a wiggle to one side). I feel great,

have stability, no problems, headaches now only the usual from

drinking too many beers or too much wine : )

Relapse is always a slight possibility, as is the risk of permanent

numbness, but you ought to talk about that with your surgeon, I

think. If he or she has done many of these, you ought to be able to

ask about former patients' results, and even contact one or two. Both

my surgeon and ortho offered patient references, but I felt enough

confidence in both of them that I didn't follow up on their offers.

And it may seem like a dumb question, but are you sure you've stopped

growing? I know of one member here who had to wait until she was in

her 30s to have the surgery. If you have it when you're still

growing, guess what? you'll be what my surgeon calls a " repeat

offender " : )

There's usually no pain associated with this surgery, just swelling &

numbness, drooling, good stuff like that.

There's also some good links on the geocities site that will help in

preparing a list of things you might want to prepare at home, and

questions to ask your surgeon at

http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/

Hope that helps,

Hi Holly,

Bone grafts are common, Ray (our moderator here) had one, I think,

and lots of other people have had them. Unfortunately, unlike the jaw

surgery portion, there is some pain associated with the bone graft.

But if you've got to do it, you do it.

I've heard of some people in Europe who had surgery without braces at

all, but it's pretty much the norm here. The surgeon needs something

to either wire up or attach rubber bands to - even if he/she uses

plates & screws for rigid fixation, they still like to keep the jaws

immobilized for a while, that period of time varies for everyone. So

it's likely you'll have to have braces put on for the surgery.

Do I sense some reluctance to have braces? I can relate, if that's

the case. In my early 20s, I totally chickened out of having them, of

course nobody at that time mentioned orthognathic surgery to me, just

pulling 4 teeth and pulling my front teeth back. I'm soooooo glad I

didn't do it, as about 25 years later, I now have a pretty great

bite, and no teeth were pulled in the process!

I was mightily embarassed the first day the braces went on (full

metal, upper & lower), but after an hour or so, decided I would just

flash a full smile at everyone so they'd get a good look at them.

It's something you have to go through. I even got lots of questions

from my work colleagues who wanted to get their teeth straightened,

so it really wasn't as bad as I feared.

Thanks for the congrats, it feels good to be this far on the " Other

Side " .
