Guest guest
Hi Kiya! I had my lower jaw advanced about 8-9mm 4 weeks ago and I didn't come out very numb at all (My surgeon said my nerves were like spaghetti though, he was way excited about it.). I have more of an altered sensation now than numbness and it's only on the left corner of my chin. My gums on the left side feel kinda funky too, but it's right where the stitches were, so I think that's just scar tissue. It was a bit more numb on that spot on my chin right out of surgery. Nerves can take a long time to regenerate, so I'm not anywhere near to thinking it will always be this way. I'm so used to it that I hardly even notice it anymore, though, so if it doesn't get better it's not all that bad. Well worth it compared to where I was before the surgery. ~Jen > Hello everyone, > I've heard that when you have your lower jaw advanced you are more > likely to have more severe permanent numbness. Guest guest
Hi Kiya, I had my lower jaw advanced about 12 weeks ago, and I'm still really numb. My doctor told me it would take 6 months for it to go away completely. It's gotten a lot better, but it's still pretty bad. The feeling is coming back at different speeds on each side of my mouth. It's so weird. Sometimes my chin feels " itchy " but scratching it doesn't feel like anything. Other times, I feel a shooting sensation - not pain - just feeling. My doctor assured me that this is what I should be experiencing. It'll go away eventually... - -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " da1kiwi " <Da1kiwi@h...> wrote: > Hello everyone, > I've heard that when you have your lower jaw advanced you are more > likely to have more severe permanent numbness. Guest guest
I had lower jaw advancement about 4.5 months ago. I've have full sensation back since 3 months post-op. Results vary from person to person.... however, my surgeon states that 1 in 9 will ahve some sort of permanent numbness from this procedure. Unless, you have a severe problem, i would NOT recommend the surgery... looking back, i would not have the surgery performed knowing what i know now... good luck! > Hello everyone, > I've heard that when you have your lower jaw advanced you are more > likely to have more severe permanent numbness. Guest guest
I had a 5mm lower advancement, plus a 3mm move to the right. Had no numbness ever. (I know. I am unusually lucky and had a very skilled surgeon.) Some folks have had long-term numbness, and at least one frequent poster here is very unhappy about having had the surgery. Most are quite satisfied with the outcome, though, I think. Guest guest
That's all part of the process for healing nerves. Hot stabs, itches that cannot be scratched, tinglies -- usually it all goes away when the nerves get themselves back together and settle in. Guest guest
Hi Kiya, I'm one week post-op from a lower advancement and genioplasty. The swelling is almost gone and there's still some numbness in my chin and lower lip. But each day it's getting better. I'm seeing the surgeon tomorrow and I'll be asking what to expect. There is a risk of permanent numbness, everyone is different. It's all about trade offs. Drop me a line in a week or two and I'll let you know what's up. > Hello everyone, > I've heard that when you have your lower jaw advanced you are more > likely to have more severe permanent numbness.
