Guest guest
Hi Nadine. Thanks for your post. Hope you are doing ok. I am going to have upper moved up also and palate split and lower brought forward hopefully soon. I was also told I would have a that nasogastric tube left in after surgery until the next day which has me worried. My surgeon said I'd be sedated so it wouldn't bother me but I don't understand how something could be going down your throat when you are awake. Can you give me more info on this tube, what does it feel like, how do you swallow with it, how did they take it out? Any other info you can share too would be helpful. Thanks. I am very scared about this surgery. > > Hi > Well…I am 4 days post-op. Had Upper Lift and Lower advancement done > on Monday late afternoon. Guest guest
Hi I also knew about the tube beforehand and my surgeon said it would be a slight discomfort. I just found it awful. I had one tube right down into my chest or wherever and then 2 really thick tubes in my two nostrils going down to my mouth/opening of throat. I know it was necessary, but I felt like I couldn't breathe properly with it down my throat. They put it in while I was under – I had it in the entire night in ICU and then the surgeon took it out while awake at 10am in the morning. It was such an amazing blissful experience getting it out – that wasn't a bad feeling – just weird and as I wanted it out so badly, I didn't notice. The main thing is that you struggle to swallow properly and the nurses came along periodically and " suctioned " me – they squirted liquid down the two large tubes and then stuffed down other tubes to clear clumps of blood – that was just a horrible feeling. Look, maybe I just took it badly, but it was honestly the worst thing about that first night – others may be completely out of it and so not notice. Apparently though, I was restless coming out of surgery and was sort of fighting the anaesthetic – they had to give me something then to calm me down, so I was NOT out of it that night. I was quite aware. But everyone is different. Having had it, I would say, do NOT let something like this put you off having the surgery, but at least you can be aware of it and try to prepare yourself for feeling a bit uncomfortable initially. Don't be scared by it – just be aware of it – I am 5 days post-op and so far nothing re this surgery is scary - just frustrating and uncomfortable moments. Guest guest
Hi! I had the lower advancement surgery in June and had the NG tube also. Prior to surgery they gave me something via the IV to put me to sleep. It was at this point that they put the tubes in. I must have been awake enough to assist in the placement of the tubes (I think you have to swallow when told) but I don't remember anything at all about the tubes being put into place. One tube was the NG tube to suction any blood from my stomach and the other was to provide oxygen since they can't have an oxygen mask over your mouth during the surgery. When I woke up from the surgery I only had the NG tube. Prior to surgery I was told that I would have it until the morning after surgery. Unfortunately I had a horrible time with nausea from the anesthesia. When my surgeon checked on me that the evening of the surgery he went ahead and took the NG tube out since it wasn't doing me any good (the nurses had tried to reposition it but it didn't help). The tube is kind of long since it goes to your stomach but I truly felt absolutely no pain or discomfort when it was in, swallowing, or even when it was removed. The only pain I have had from the surgery was the day of surgery when I was ill. My jaws hurt I guess from the strain of trying to open my mouth (since I was banded shut I couldn't open but maybe 1/4 " ). I was more worried going into the surgery about getting ill and having my mouth banded shut. It ended up not being a problem. The nurses had a set of wire cutters by my side all the time (and even sent them home with me for my home care) if they needed to cut the bands quickly and also kept a suction devise by my side to help keep my mouth clear. Looking back at my surgery and recovery I realize I was blessed to have it really easy. I hope your surgery and recovery goes as well as mine did!! > > > > > > Hi > > > Well…I am 4 days post-op. Guest guest
Thanks so much for the info. That's very helpful. I hope my recovery is as easy as yours too! hoochboston <no_reply > wrote: Hi! I had the lower advancement surgery in June and had the NG tube also. Guest guest
Thanks so much for the info. That's very helpful. I hope my recovery is as easy as yours too! hoochboston <no_reply > wrote: Hi! I had the lower advancement surgery in June and had the NG tube also. Guest guest
My doc said I'd have the nasogastric tube in, and one must, according to him, have the tube into the lungs, for the sake of anesthesia. Both were installed after I was asleep, and removed before I awakened. So my only awareness of them came from my REALLY sore throat, post-op. None of this was hideous for me -- but maybe I had an easy ride through it, as I did through the rest of the surgery. Blessings on my surgeon, and my anaesthesiology team!!! As for the arthritis -- it's my impression that you're in more peril from serious troubles with that if you don't get the pressures in your jaws balanced out, but I'm no specialist in these matters. Most of the folks I've heard having troubles with arthritic joints had major problems because their problematic bites were not addressed soon enough.
