Guest guest
I am having the lower advancement done in January and have some questions. How long after surgery before you can talk? My job requires much communication and wanted to know approximately how long I may need to be off. Is it hard for the surgeon to make your jaw symmetrical. one of my concerns is my jaw not lining up straight and it looking like it is off on one side or another. I was also wondering about arthritis after long term. and, I play on a basketball league. Would having this surgery prevent me from playing sports and will the jaw regains its full strength? Thanks

Guest guest
From what my surgeon has told me ( I had lower jaw advancement on Nov. 15) I have to stay away from sports for a while. I imagine with upper jaw surgery, this would be imperative too. Also, I could speak from day one, but you really do not WANT to. It is strange, you are numb and cannot feel your tongue, lips, cheeks, etc. I am now 12 days post op, and my swelling is finally gone, the bruising is almost gone, and I actually got to work ONE full day at work. I find the more I try to talk, the more my cheeks hurt. I had to be banded shut, so ask your surgeon if he/she uses " ridgid support " after surgery or if you'll have to be banded shut. I wish I could have had the plates screwed into my bone on the sides, then I could have eaten and talked a lot sooner. Good luck! > > I am having the lower advancement done in January and have some > questions. > How long after surgery before you can talk?
