It depends what your doctorn said and what the carbs consist of....If it is

sugar alcohol, watch out. Too much sugar alcohol has a laxative effect. If

its flour, whatever the doctor says. My doctor said no carbs until 75% weight

loss. That included vegetables too. Make sure you talk to your doctor about

those kinds of questions, because every doctor is different.

I have not had a lot of trouble with carbs. My goal is to eat

protein first then vegies and fuits and I am filled by those so

carbs are not really an issue for me. I would be interested to hear

what your nutrionist says about that cos mine never made it a big

deal.. keep me posted

> I know the goal here post op is to watch carbs,But im wondering if

its ok for a few carbs if using a 0 sugar product.I don't know why

but when reading a label im more inclined to buy a product that has

0 sugars instead of looking at carbs.I think the reasoning behind

this is that when your research begins into WLS your are taught that

sugars are bad and will make most dump,so when shopping the dump

fear kicks in and you go for a product that has a label that says 0

sugars.

I think that I watch carbs, just from being on the Atkins diet for so

long(and it not working, by the way)...I approach my food intake

differently. I tend to focus on the sugars and the fats, because I

don't want to dump. My doc put no restrictions on carbs for me. I

figure that if I want a cracker or a bagel, I will eat, I can't eat

much, so I figure I am really not consuming that many carbs anyway.

One of the first things I was allowed to eat was potatoe soup or

mashed potatoes, but they make me sick so I shy away from them...good

luck!

Hi Allan,

Carbs are your friend as long as you eat the right ones. Remember the

old saying about how the car needs gas to burn to run? It is the same

thing with people. You will get to a stage where you need to add in

some good carbs in order for your body to have something to burn. If

you don't, you'll eventually hit a plateau that won't budge until you

do. Right now, you may be experiencing alot of fat burning due to the

increase in protien and exercise, but with no carbs at all, you will

crap out eventually.

This whole process of surgery includes the behavior modification which

has to do with changing habits and learning to eat again with the making

of right choices. Your reading lables and knowing what you are eating

is one of the good habits and will give you much skill as this process

plays out. Consuming less then 5 sugars in a serving is very fair but

the exchange comes in fruits, where they can contain in the 20's of

sugars, but these are again the safer carbs and sugars and because they

take longer for the body to release. What you want to avoid is

granulated sugars, corn syrup and stuff like that which is hidden in

alot of products.

A sweet potato or yam is awesome for a carb at dinner or lunch, only 1/4

or half with some butter and cinniman is yummy. It's got less calories

then a white potato and has more fiber which actually cancels out the

fiber carbs.

Wild rice is another grain and a good carbo. Just eat it in moderation

after eating your steak or turkey for dinner. Gravy isn't bad, just keep

it at small amount and make it with cornstarch or wheat flour.

I don't know of anyone that follows a 0 carb program. I think the norm

is anywhere from 20-60 a day. I have days where I'm less then 20, other

days I'm around 30, just one day at a time and vary it. Your eating

small portions now so it's just not something you have to worry too much

about, just use common since.

Hugs!

Allan, I too was told to watch the sugars, but nothing about the carbs. I

brought it up to the doctor at my 6 week check, and she told me to not worry

about them for now. Once again, doctors are all different.

I was told to avoid white rice, but that brown rice was fine. Lots of

Allan just to confirm what wrote. My doc put me on 70% protein, 20%

fruits and vegs, 10% carbs when I was allowed back on regular diet. But the

carb provision was NOTHING WHITE!!! No rice (except brown or wild), no

white bread, no white flour, no sugar etc....

When I was 10 weeks out I was still exhausted and had almost no strength. I

could still not go grocery shopping by myself because I could not walk the

whole store. My doc at that point told me to get one serving of carbs at

every meal. For me that means 1/2 slice of low carb bread or something

about that size. Things really changed for me after that. I could move

again. I never felt so grateful for anything in my whole life.

What you care about is the " effective " carbs. Those are the carbs which

effect your glucose levels. Not many products show that but you can always

buy a good diabetic carb counting book which will tell you what is what, or

you can use Atkins products (but they are pricey) which normally tell you

how many " Effective carbs " something has or (and this is the easiest and

cheapest way) just keep to the rule of nothing white and avoid anything

processed. Anything in it's most natural form will usually be ok.
