Guest guest
Paige, with liquids if something didn't feel good, I'd switch to something else. I'm with you, I certainly didn't want an IV, so I always write down the quantity of liquids I get to get the 64 oz, and anything after that is fine, some days I've actually had an extra 32 oz. Seems impossible because I wasn't a liquid drinker prior to this. I don't leave the house without a water bottle. If it's going to be all day, I take 3 of them (48 oz.) As to eating a little more, and then losing. It really boggles me, but it does work. Many on here have said just that. I do make sure I eat enough protein, but don't always get all the meals in. I was really stuck, and sort-of bummed, so started getting all the food in and it started moving again. Without this site, I wouldn't have known to do that! I'm curious too about hormones. If fat does store estrogen, then what happens after losing so much fat? Anyone here know?? Guest guest
Hi Joan! I think I've found a bit of info on the estrogen! My group leader loaned me a book pre-op that I happened to be looking at again tonight. It's the Boasten book Weight Loss Surgery - Understanding & Overcoming Morbid Obesity. p 145 in the post op adjustments section: " The Estrogen Adjustments: Estrogen is stored in the fat cells. As you lose weight rapidly, estrogen is free-flowing. This free-flowing estrogen can create several significant problems; hair loss, contraceptive failure, fertility issues, depression, mood swings, nausea and period changes. Your gynecologist or PCP should monitor your estrogen levels. In some cases, you may need hormone therapy for a few months while the weight loss is the most rapid. " Estrogen running amok. What a concept! Paige lap RNY 12/11/03 399/370/200-175 Western Colorado Dr. Dickinson

Indeed it does. Playing board games while sitting burns 1 cal per minute .. and walking/running after kids ....burns ... 4cals per minute!!! I remember when mine were little ... a " long nap " was a gift from heaven in those days.... Guest guest
OMG.....you actually found the calories burned by playing board games!!! The nice thing was, is was easier than before to get down....but I didn't feel like a cow trying to get up. I was pretty proud of myself. I wish she'd nap, but she doesn't want to miss anything and 5 out of 7 days she doesn't nap. She gets a bit cranky in the later afternoon. But at least we've had two pretty good nights (only got up twice each night and she fell right back asleep). Before it was waking up every hour, and then up for good at 4:00-5:00a.m. even though she didn't go to bed until 11:00pm. Her mom comes today to get her, but I'm going to assume it'll be late in the day. Well, I'm going to go sit down with her, and burn off 1 calorie a minute!! Gotta love the internet for being such a great resource. Apparently, too much estrogen doesn't just unbalance your hormones. I was reading that it also unbalances trace minerals. The one I found mentioned on several different sites that really caught my eye was the zinc to copper ratio. Estrogen in high levels apparently causes copper to rise so the zinc is lower....and the weird thing was, my Dr.'s office suggests zinc to help with/help prevent hair loss. I'm not sure how much it helps, but I know of at least one person who says it makes a big difference for her. Interesting coincidence I thought! I also found an interesting correlation with the articles I found that talks about women who are overweight being more predisposed to cancers in general. And the more overweight you are, the higher the incidence. I remember something from school about increased copper levels having an association with cancer formation. So if fat stores estrogen, and extra estrogen increases copper, and if copper is implicated in cancers....wow. Talk about sobering! But, then again, it's another great thing about this surgery...the more fat cells you lose the less risk? I'm not a scientist, but it seemed to make sense! Another interesting imbalance estrogen can cause apparently is a sodium imbalance. The way one article read, the estrogen causes the body to store sodium....and then we retain water. The heavier one gets/more estrogen stored, the higher the rate of sodium retention and the more swelling we get from the water retention. I always wondered why the more I weighed, the more swelling I had --(even when I had no heart or blood pressure problems.) And I won't even go into the chin whiskers thing! LOL The up side of excess estrogen though, my Dr. told me years ago that at least with being overweight, I'd likely have great bones. Bad joints, but good bones. LOL Thanks for the discussion about the hormones Joan...the thoughts you had really piqued my interest! There sure is a lot of intriguing information out there on it.
