Hi Kat,

I actually have a little lump under my right ear that's been there

for a long time. I had it biopsied as it swelled up at one point.

That's when I was told it was a blocked salivary gland (although I

have no problems with the levels of salivation) and quite benign. It

was an ENT doc that diagnosed it, he says they don't do anything

unless it grows to about the size of a strawberry (it hasn't grown).

That's because it's about a 4 hour surgery - there are a lot of

complicated structures in that area. It's possible this could be

something similar.

I would have it checked out (it's unlikely that it's from your

surgery, I think, but I'm no expert), then you can set your mind at

ease.

Kat, I don't know anything about this. You are one of a very few

people I know who got those dissolving plates and screws.

Can you get through to your oral surgeon on the phone to ask him

about this?

I would definitely get in line to see a doc about it. Swollen glands

alone can be symptomatic of everything from an upper respiratory

infection to... well, let's not go there. But best to get it checked

out, in any case.

I believe that these are still experimental in the United States. Kat

had them, and at least one member in Canada did, as well.

They are a newfangled achievement of modern science -- polymer and/or

bone, I'm thinking -- and yep. The screws and plates actually do

dissolve or resorb into the bone.

I suspect that you do not have them, but have the more traditional

titanium plates and screws, which don't go away unless your surgeon

removes them.

i have had a lump in my neck, near the same place, for a year and a half

now. i've had it tested twice and it's nothing. sometimes they just come up.

i'm going tomorrow to the ENT to see when they're going to remove it.

Jo,

Cammie is right (as usual) I did some research and asked my OS about

this. The plates and screws are made from reabsorbable polymer, and

after the bone is fully healed and has grown in to cover all the

holes and whatnot, the polymer dissolves and is absorbed and then

flushed out of your body.

My surgeon said it was still considered experiemtnal and not approved

by the FDA yet.
