But, if you have a serious depression, you are better off having someone that knows a lot about all drugs available. Cosing to make this decisions yourself alone, can be dangerous.>> I actually skipped responding to these concerns about my using anti-depressants the last time they went around, but thought I'd do so this time. I appreciate your concerns. I am a clinical psychologist, have done several bouts of therapy myself, and worked extensively on issues of depression (clinical and episodic). Discussions and reviews of medication are always made in conjunction with a professional, but the decision to medicate (whether it be vitamins, anti-depressants, or any other medication) is always, and will always, be mine. I'll just throw in my own .02 cents about anti-depressants and the whole range of mood altering drugs. I believe people come in all ranges of personality types - some are happy and bouncy, some are serious, some are quiet, some are sad, some are snappy and short tempered, etc. I would never want to see someone medicate because they felt they should be a different personality type. We need the impatient and sad people just as much as we do the positive and upbeat ones. If I am unhappy more than I am happy or content, if I feel bad emotionally and psychologically on a regular basis, and if being that way interefered with the quality of life, then anti-depressants may be warranted. But I would never medicate because I am not a bouncy, happy positive person, or because I am snappy, or whatever. Medication can be a wonderful tool, but I do believe as a society we over-medicate in way too many areas. Kate
