Guest guest
hi ash, it's lari in austin. i am really sorry to hear about this. it sounds alot like my situation. i am supposed to have a bilateral conylotomy because my arthoscopy with suture plication relapse. it's tough. who gave you the second opinion? vorhees? ashdash_99 wrote: I had upper/lower/genio on Oct. 5, 2004, and upon a drop-in visit to my dentist, he commented on how my mid-line was off. After bringing it to the attention of my ortho, he told me today that it is indeed off by 3.7 mm. He told me that I had the choice to keep it as is, or to go in for a revision surgery. He said that mistakes do happen. They already had to move my upper and lower jaw to one side 7 mm, but with cases as complicated as mine, it's easy for things to be missed. Essentially, I'd have to have everything done over again and start from square one, but the surgery wouldn't be as long or as involved. I broke the news to my boss this morning as my job has been SO wonderful about all of this, and I am close to tears. I'm willing to go through this again because I want everything to be perfect, but I'm frustrated, sad, and hungry for real food. Is there anyone else who has had more than one surgery in a short amount of time? I will be getting more details on Tuesday as I still have a lot of unanswered questions. Guest guest
Lari, Dr. told me this morning that we needed to have a conversation about my midline. He said he emailed both my OS (Quaroni) and my dentist (Peppard) to let them know that he would be having this discussion with me. said that if I were his wife or his daughter, he'd tell me to have the surgery. I noticed that something was " off " , but I didn't know what it was. Now I know. I see the OS on Tuesday and will get more details then. Dr. Fuselier may sit in on it as well, I'm not quite sure. I'll be sure to let you know! I have a lot of questions, and because of them, I'm feeling anxious, but everything will turn out okay. The holidays may not be as active for me as I'm used to, but I just want to get this all over with!! > > I had upper/lower/genio on Oct. 5, 2004, and upon a drop-in visit to > my dentist, he commented on how my mid-line was off. Guest guest
Dr. is so funny. When I saw him before he would tell me kind of the same things. He quit seeing me though because he didn't agree with me having the surgery I had. It was really all a misunderstanding, to my dismay. Dr. told Dr. Weil he didn't think i should have the surgery and then Dr. Weil told me that Dr. misunderstood what kind of surgery i was having and that they were in agreement. So i had the surgery and went to see Dr. and he told me that there was not a misunderstanding. I'm not sure how i became misled. It seems that Dr. Weil was not clear with me about them all being in agreement, but I am not going to point any fingers because I have no idea where we all went our different ways. Dr. Weil seems very nice and he is my surgeon and i wouldn't want to do that to him. However, i feel i am really missing out on Dr. 's expertise. he goes out of his way to help his patients it seems. lari ashdash_99 wrote: Lari, Dr. told me this morning that we needed to have a conversation about my midline. Guest guest
Yes, there are some, although I'm not sure any of them are still regular posters (please forgive me if I'm forgetting someone). I hope it will ease your mind at least a bit to know that most have reported that the second round goes more easily. And I'm not in the least surprised that you are frustrated and teary. But remember, the frustration will pass, and you will again be on solid food. The wait is longer, and that's no fun. You may also be in the throes of a bit of post-op depression -- I would be, at this point! Good luck! Guest guest
Hi , I have a midline issue also, i am 4. months post op. I am going for an OD appt on Thursday of this week and with a new plan, he is going to remove back brackets on upper and lower teeth and shift all my teeth to the left. i will be in braces much longer, but like you, i want this correct! the only thing i MAY be going in for again for surgery is an implant to the side of my chin to correct an off center chin that was present prior to surgery, but not noticed and now accentuated because of surgery! I may also want a screw taken out as it is bothersome. Best of luck. > > I had upper/lower/genio on Oct. 5, 2004, and upon a drop-in visit to > my dentist, he commented on how my mid-line was off. I noticed that my midline was off by about 3mm on day three when I was cleaning my teeth. I thought I was mislead by the swelling so I said nothing of it. When the swelling subsided the misalignment was more apparent. I reported it to the surgeon and he placed numerous elastics in my mouth. Nine days later the problem is corrected, it is slighly off but you need a ruler to detect it. Can I ask when the misalignment was detected? At the point that it was detected was it too late for elstics. > go through this again because I want everything to be perfect, but > I'm frustrated, sad, and hungry for real food. Yes, the possibility of more surgery was hanging over my head for a week. It was a hard week. I am three weeks post-op and although I have largely maintained my weight (I have lost only 0.5kg) I do have cravings for real food. You have my sympathy and empathy. Remind yourself that it is all temporary. In a few weeks you will be looking back on your experience, it will be a mere memory. Every morning when you see your reflection you will be saying it was trying at times but it was worth it. God bless. -

Guest guest
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, mine cannot be corrected with elastics. I'm going for a second OS opinion on Thursday, so I'll gather more info there. My midline is off 4 mm according to calculations by my orthodontist and my OS. So far, we're on for the second surgery, and it will most likely take place Nov. 11. From what I understand, the second time around won't be so bad as there is less to do. The risk for nerve damage is higher, but I want my smile to be aligned with my face, so I'm willing to risk it. My misalignment was detected about 10 days post op by my dentist. Emotionally, I'm prepared for another surgery, but this, too, shall pass! > > Hello , > > > I had upper/lower/genio on Oct. 5, 2004, and upon a drop-in visit > to > > my dentist, he commented on how my mid-line was off. Guest guest
I realy hope everything will go well and God bless you for your courage to go thorugh surgery once more. I have noticed my midline was off few months ago... I'm one year post op. My old ortho didnt notice it or maybe she just didnt pay attention. I moved overseas and my new ortho noticed it and told me about it.. and nothing I can do about it unless I have corrective surgery. Well my husband doesnt want to spend more money for it. At least it's not so severe and not very much noticeable. But when I laugh .. I can see my jaw goes sideways. I dont know how many mm off midline... I have to find out in my next visit to Ortho. Guest guest
, honey... I'm not saying do or don't do it. We all know that something tiny in our mouths can seem enormous to us. But do you realise that 4 mm is less than a quarter of an inch? I do believe that my midlines are off more than that, and cannot be fixed, because of the difference in the size of teeth as well as the different number of teeth I have lost on left and right size. I do plan to keep right on going, nevertheless, as my bite now seems to work well. Just a notion for you, and one you might wish to inquire about. Sometimes we get all these really specialized ideas, I think, about how things are supposed to work, and lose track of how they are working. I'm not second-guessing your docs. If they say it's important, hey, they know way more than do i. Just a thought. Guest guest
cammie, I have to respectfully disagree with you on the midline issue. 4mm is about half the width if a front tooth. my midline is off by 3 mm and my normal bite makes my incisers hit before any other teeth. the back teeth also don't align due to the midline being off rotation. the banding is pulling my lower jaw to the side to allow it close but creates a crossbite. the problem i see is that i would have to wear bands long enough to train my jaw to rise into that position which would take a looooong time and is not normal. I run the risk of snapping those two teeth off if i subconscously bite naturally.the only other option is for surgery again. As of yesterday my OS still thinks it'll be fine but he said that after the first try so needless to say he has zero credibility with me. the only problem i had with a second opinion was the reluctance to say what they think went wrong and to clean up someone elses mess. even an ortho denied me and just referred me back to the teachers hospital. alas/eric > > > > > > Hello , > > > > > > > I had upper/lower/genio on Oct. 5, 2004, and upon a drop-in > visit > > > to > > > > my dentist, he commented on how my mid-line was off. Guest guest
Oh, eric, I don't think we disagree at all. You have some real occlusal and structural problems going on, and I don't blame you for wanting them fixed! (I don't blame anybody for wanting visual or cosmetic ones fixed, either, for that matter.) But hasn't mentioned any functional problems -- or if she has, I don't remember them. If the only thing that's going on in her mouth is the visual difference 4 mm makes, I just think it might be worth reconsidering. I have mismatched midlines, but the bite is fine! My docs said not to worry -- and I haven't. Haven't had any reason to, either. that's all. Cammie And I think it's lousy that the docs won't help you out. They're sposed to be in the business of helping people resolve their problems, I thought!

Guest guest
Cammie, having missing teeth may make your midline a non issue for you but in general teeth are designed to line up. Granted the front teeth are less important but midlines being off are a sign that the occlusion is also off. If the midlines are off the same amount I guess the occlusion would be fine. you're right in that she didn't say what was off upper lower or both but after surgery if the upper is off that usually means it is out of rotation and causes a crossbite as with me. It's funny you should mention the aesthetic aspect because that's what the ortho told me right before he said he wouldn't help me. I guess he only takes the easy cases! I still hope to be able to find an ortho who will brace me in preparation for a maxillary impaction and rotation. After all I really did need to take an extra year off to convalesce after the last 25. lol ps- I'd love to get some help with my issues but that would mean another 15 grand and the same guy getting a third crack at me-no thanks. eric > > Oh, eric, I don't think we disagree at all.
