Guest guest
I've recently noticed my gums are receding in certain areas. I suspect this started happening after the ortho changed the position of 6 brackets. Do the gums grow back when the braces are off, or is this permanent? My ortho warned me that expanding my upper arch too quickly or too much could cause permanent periodontal problems. Is this what is happening now? Any have this experience? I know my ortho, like most good orthos, is cognizant of receding gum lines… but I wonder why he didn't even mention it to me last time…. I won't see my ortho for another 4 weeks, but I'm bit concerned because the gum recession is quite dramatic over the last 8 weeks!

Guest guest
I had braces, SARPE and upper and lower jaw surgery about 2 years ago. Since then I have had a lot of problems with receding gums. My gums were not great before the surgery, but they definitely took a dramatic turn for the worse afterwards. I've tried flossing more, using an electric toothbrush, brushing the gums at a 45 degree angle, using Listerine... nothing has helped so far. The strange thing is that I rarely get any bleeding at all while flossing and brushing, but the recession continues. I thought that bleeding was one of the main signs of infected gums, so I don't really understand what's happening. My periodontist told me that most gum recession is usually permanent. The only way to repair it is with a graft if it becomes severe. I'm scheduled for a graft this Friday on three of my bottom front teeth. Unfortunately, I have also lost some bone around those teeth, so it might be too late for them. Anyway, I don't mean to alarm you, but I have learned the hard way that this is something to take seriously and monitor closely. - > > > I've recently noticed my gums are receding in certain areas. Guest guest
thanks for the warning...i suspected that it would be permanent... however, did your periodontist conclude the gum recession was the result of your ortho treatment? > > > > > > I've recently noticed my gums are receding in certain areas. Guest guest
Hi I also have problem with gum recession ..luckily only one after 3 years of wearing braces. My ortho told me it's how we brush our teeth that can cause it... not because of the braces. So I have been very careful when brushing teeth. Position to brush properly vertically and not horizontally also use very soft brush and dont brush too harsh. Also when using the tiny brush to clean between the brackets or teeth .. do it very gently. I plan to see periodontist soon. Hope it helps. > > > > > > > > > I've recently noticed my gums are receding in certain areas. Guest guest
I dunno. But if I were you, I would make a beeline for a competent periodontist. After, of course, I stopped by to see my local banker for a second mortgage on my house. Cammie > > > I've recently noticed my gums are receding in certain areas. Guest guest
The gum recession only started happening when my ortho recently changed the position of 6 bracket; consequently, i suspect it's from the ortho's work, not my brushing... it's amazing how fast ones gum lines can recede... NOT good! funnily, my ortho has been always cautioning me about asking him to rush the treatment because it can lead to serious periodontal problems in the future... DAMN! > > > > > > > > > I've recently noticed my gums are receding in certain areas.
