Guest guest
Hi everyone On thursday I went to what was supposed to be my 2nd last/last appt with my orthodontist before my surgery in Sept. Well after getting pre-surgical x-rays and photographs taken by one of the women there, my ortho comes along and takes a look at my teeth. He says that the gap where they had pulled one of my back teeth still isn't closed yet and the 2 upper back teeth are at a bit of an angle. So he wants to POSTPONE MY SURGERY!!!!!!!! I actually got emotional right there and found it hard to make it through the rest of the day. My life has been on hold for SO LONG for this and now he wants me to wait another 5 months??? and WHY would it take that long to close a little gap and straighten those 2 back teeth?? I am still very frustrated with this situation. I had a " power chain " put on to help get that gap closed, WHY wasn't this put on at my last appt? I feel very frustrated with my orthodontist's office ~ everytime you go there you get bounced around to a different chair with a different person working on you. The ortho comes along to check things out at some point during the appt ~ is this how it works in other offices? No one was really monitoring my situation and I actually had to tell them/remind them that my surgery was in Sept ~ they seemed to have no clue! Don't get me wrong, it is a wonderful place full of friendly ppl and they are very good at what they do, but maybe they aren't used to surgical patients?? or have too many patients, it's always hectic there and you never really have time to ask a lot of questions. Has anyone else had a major setback like this? Maybe I sound ridiculous being so heartbroken at this news but I have no insurance and have been paying the bills working various temp jobs ~ at least my surgery is covered by healthcare!! I feel like a prisoner in a really horrible prison who just got denied parole. I had been counting the days till my surgery and already made arrangements, besides all the mental preparation. My bite is now a LOT worse and it's getting more and more difficult to talk, besides being embarrassed by the way I look! I really wanted this done before my 27th birthday in Nov. And if the surgery is in Jan/Feb I have to worry about snowstorms and getting down to Halifax and back. Thanks for letting me vent ~ to top my day off I tried posting a similar message on Thurs. which didn't go through and got erased!! PS ~ the only good thing that happened is the women who worked on me that day took my side and went against the ortho's wishes and got me an appt 3 weeks from now (instead of 4-6 weeks) ~ she may be my only hope to getting this surgery done sooner than later. Guest guest
erika, did you ask your oral surgeon for his opinion? I've read that the back teeth are the most important to have in place for surgery cuz thats where they do the cutting. I can understand your frustration though cuz we all want to think we're their only patient and all their attention should be on us but sometimes I'm glad they just remember my name let alone what's wrong with me! You might wanna be glad they caught the problem instead of sending you on just for complications in the future. We all get setbacks in our little journey. your still young so keep your chin up. I'd rather get a no once in a while cuz it shows they aren't comfortable yet. My doctor thinks he walks on water and can overcome any obstacles and for that I get to go back and have it done right the second time(I hope). remember anything worthwhile takes time. eric - In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " oighrig77 " <oighrig77@y...> wrote: > Hi everyone > > On thursday I went to what was supposed to be my 2nd last/last appt > with my orthodontist before my surgery in Sept. Guest guest
Man that bites, no pun intended. Actually this happened to me too, all year they had been saying I would be ready probably by June. so I didn't get a job or make any plans for the summer. then I go to an appoitment in mid june so I knew it wasn't happening then but thought myabe July. nope the orthodontist said August! I was so Peod. but then it was so late to schedule it that it looked like it was going to be in Septemeber which I couldn't do because school starts Sept 21st. the OS though moved some things around and was able to book the hospital for this thursday so that was good. But it is still frustrating and dissapointing. but at least your health care is covering it thats good news and really lucky! Anyway my first orthadontist would always do stuff like what yours did, he would say " your next appoitment we will make the appoitment to take the braces off " then I would go and he would say I wasn't ready yet. And he never ever communicated with the Oral surgeon. It was horriable and because of his mal treatment it has made everything worse resaulting in loss of roots and eventually three adult teeth being pulled and replaced by implants and a bridge. there should have only been four implants now five and a bridge! But now I have an excellant team and they communicate really well. You might as for an appoitment with your OS and dentist and ask them tell you what the plan is and show you want they are trying to accomplish that way you can be better imformed and that helps A LOT! Even though I was frustrated that my Surgery was put off a little longer then what the origianal guess of when it would be I know that they can only control how fast things move and I would much rather wait and have the sugery done under the best conditions so it actually works. It wasn't my orthadontist fault that things had to wait thats just the way nature is and I have learned to add a few months-a few years to anything they say because my teeth are so unpredictable and they never know how long things will take. Hang in there and when all is said and done you will be glad you waited and had it done the right way then rushed it and not had the best possiable resaults. but it is tough especially when your mind is set on it to then have it moved. as far as the orthadontist, usually in my office its with one person but sometimes because of schedules I get someone else, theres only one al I really dislike and the other are super. thats agin just life and the way it is. and no the orthadontist shouldn't sit in on your appoitment the whole time otherwise things would take a lot longer! but he should check things over and make sure the things that are supposed to be done are done correctly. I would actually be concerned if a hygenist went behind the doctors back and moved an appoitment up, that shows there isn't much respect and he is the one with the years and years of education and expiernce. Its not a taking sides issue, its just an issue of when your teeth move and some move slower then others. if you are truley concerned then get a second opinion. and before any surgery you will meet with the oral surgeon and be paying deposits and having records taken and all of that so untill that happens I wouldn't hold your breath! liz > Hi everyone > > On thursday I went to what was supposed to be my 2nd last/last appt > with my orthodontist before my surgery in Sept. Guest guest
, I had a similar delay for a different reason, I was postponed 9 months. Just as I was told I was ready for surgery, my surgeon at the time decided not to operate on me (but failed to mention this to me, unfortunately!!) What should be more frustrated is that I just had my first 'working' appointment with the ortho after the surgery (12 weeks post op) and he said I'll have 5 or 6 months of braces and I'll be done. In other words, I'd already be out of braces if the first surgeon would have told me to find another surgeon from the beginning... :-) As for the Ortho's clinic, the way it works for me is that I come at their office, one of his assistant will do the work, and he will come in at the end to make notes in my file. He'll chat with me a few moments or a longer time if the clinic isn't full. Strangely, the more extensive the work done, the least time I will see him. Still, I know he knows me and my case because if I ask questions (precise questions) on my case, he'll answer without looking at my file and I know he's right. All this to say, what matters more isn't the duration of the appointment with the ortho himself, but rather the quality of the time spent (for me, that is). Guest guest
Sorry to hear this. Sounds like you have a communication gap with your Ortho that needs to be fixed. If your teeth needed additonal work he should have realized that months ago and should have worked with your Oral Surgeon then to change the date. It is very important that the two work together as a team during this process and you might need to make an appointment with him just to talk about that. I feel very lucky to have Dr as my Ortho who has a great working relationship with my Oral Surgeon. I kept asking when my surgery date was and he kept telling me not quite yet and then told me what more had to be done. When it was within a few months of surgery he coordinated how he would set my teeth up for surgery with the OS and thats how they " stabilized " for some months. I also have two post surgical appointments set up with my Ortho to continue my care post surgery, one at three weeks post op and another seven weeks post op. All part of the intricate ballet. > Hi everyone > > On thursday I went to what was supposed to be my 2nd last/last appt > with my orthodontist before my surgery in Sept. Guest guest
, You have my empathy! The exact same thing happened to me merely 3 days before surgery. This is a pretty major surgery and it takes alot of mental preparation---to have it called off so suddenly DOES have an emotional impact. I too had some insurance issues to worry about that added to the stress (I was paying for some reeeeally expensive insurance plan and wanted to get off asap). I was told I might have to wait about 5 monthes...but as it turned out my teeth move much faster than expected and I had it about 2 monthes later. So you never know. I know this is highly frustrating, but you will make it through! Best of luck! Guest guest
This happened to me as well, I was scheduled in December then rescheduled for May and ended up going in July, It is horribly frustrating. I also cried when my surgeon told me I wasn't ready yet, (not in the office, but in my car)The second time was even worse. All I can say is trust your docs. I waited and I am very happy with the results, my bite is beautiful. I'm still having some post-op issues, but I'm confident everything will fall in place. I don't know if this helps any, but you will get through it and everything will be great. Venta ll you want here. Guest guest
Frustrating indeed. But remember bodies are not a perfect science...and I bet if you took a poll, maybe 2 out of 10 pep on here went in On schedule. I was supposed to be 6 mths braces, srugery, 6 mths braces...meaning all of 2003, surg summertime. Well I took no vacation last yr-saving it for time off and then was looking forward to a wedding this yr, but guess what? I am 2 weeks post-op TODAY. And yeah I cried here and there, sucks when you're planning and hopeful, but only your body can tell them when you are " ready " ........ hang in there...your time will come, and better for you that it's when your body is poised for surg. Otherwise who wants to have to fight harded through recovery? Chin up and think good thoughts...maybe see if your ortho will see you a week or so sooner for apts...like I was always 6 wks, an dtowards the end moved up to 4 wks, then 3...etc........ good luck and one day at a time...you will get there! Guest guest
I got delayed as well for surgery. I was suppose to get a maxillary advancement and mandibular setback that was scheduled for this August, but they said that more ortho work needed to be done and my bite if I had the surgery wouldn't be stable. I also have to wait until December because of school and yes it is a big letdown but at least it seems like the ortho and the surgeon know what they are doing, which gives me some assurance that my surgery when it happens will be done correctly. > Hi everyone > > On thursday I went to what was supposed to be my 2nd last/last appt > with my orthodontist before my surgery in Sept.
Guest guest
Hi everyone! Thanks for all your replies, I read all of them ~ I'm glad to know there are a few ppl who had to go through this as well. I feel a lot better about it now, and I'm trying to remain optimistic. A few things I need to clear up though ~ my ortho assistant didn't really " take sides " like I said, the assistants there are very well educated and pretty much know as much as my ortho as they have been doing this a long time ~ they even do a better job sometimes adjusting the hardware etc. She has the right to decide when I go back and thought 3 weeks would be better since the 'power chain' doesn't do anything after that point. I was very frustrated about the crooked back teeth b/c prior to my last appt I was wearing elastics which were MAKING them turn that way ~ I was actually defiant at one point and stopped wearing one for a couple weeks and complained at the appt before last b/c that is the only tooth I have to chew with and it was too painful having it at an angle with only the point touching. The assistant that time put the thicker surgical wire in and said that should stop the teeth from rolling and got me to wear the elastics again. I feel that if I would have gotten the proper treatment back then and even before that (ie a power chain) I wouldn't be in this position and would be on schedule:( But that's life I guess ~ it's going to be a tough 5 months as I feel like a circus freak who will soon need to use sign language to communicate, but maybe this is one last ordeal I have to overcome in order to have my new life! Above all I want this to go smoothly and will do whatever it takes. Thanks again everybody > > Hi everyone > > > > On thursday I went to what was supposed to be my 2nd last/last appt > > with my orthodontist before my surgery in Sept.
