Guest guest
I don't know that i've heard of anybody getting both kinds, before, but then I'm not in the business. I do believe I've heard that they can work in different ways to resolve different problems. My ortho said, for example, that the clear acryllic ones are particularly good for holding rotations. And I do know of one person who found that her teeth moved excessively in one or the other -- but I forget which. Things may take some adjustments. But I believe if I were having the results you're feeling, I'd be beating down my ortho's office door, to be sure that things are as he/she intended them to be. I surely wouldn't want my teeth moving in any way that he hadn't planned. And of course, your ortho may have a reason for whatever he's put in there -- but I'd be asking him to explain it. As for keeping the Essix ones clean. I brush 'em every time I take them out. I soak them in the " Retainer Brite " or whatever the fizzy stuff is called, for about 15 minutes a day. They're still just a bit grody, after 2 years + of wear. But I figure that a. I'm probably pretty near due for some new ones, anyhow. And b., as was the case with the wrist splints I wore for a while for carpal tunnel trouble -- the splints got really grody, despite my laundering them regularly -- the grodiness is evidence that they've been where they're sposed to be! ;~> Cammie Cammie .... > > I had been pretty lucky in this 2-year orthognathic journey I've > been on... Guest guest
I dont know what to tell you about whats normal but I have similar problems. My retainers dont fit at all. The top retainer has little arcs of metal between and around my back teeth that bang into other teeth if I try to close my mouth. They're squarish more than circular except that they arent flat--they stick out. Ortho didnt think it was a problem that I couldnt close my mouth, simply said " youre not supposed to EAT with them on. " One retainer bangs into another and they also try to give me an uneven bite. The bottom retainer is worse as it has prongs that sit right on my fillings, and its painful to get in or out. Ortho doesnt think any of this is a problem. Its not--for him--he already has all his money and probably just wants to get rid of me. And my retainers DO make my teeth sore. I dont think they put much effort into making them correctly. And I dont think this is the way they're supposed to be either. I had a retainer many years ago and, until it broke, never had one of these problems with it. One of the great things about surgery was that I could finally close my mouth fully. At least I COULD before the retainers came. Sigh. I'd love to try the clear ones but since I dont have a couple extra thousand dollars lying around, Im stuck with these old fashioned retainers that Jack built. So now you havet my little 'Rant'lette on the topic. > > I had been pretty lucky in this 2-year orthognathic journey I've > been on... Guest guest
That's exactly what my ortho said too " You aren't allowed to eat with your retainers on so it's okay if you can't bite down all the way " ... but I feel like you do..that after surgery it was so nice to not have all the tension in my chin when I closed my lips together... but now it's back again since my retainers keep my mouth from relaxing closed. It isn't nice and it isn't fun to be doing the whole retainer thing at all, but atleast it makes me feel a little bit better when someone's experiencing the same frustrations..
