Guest guest
How important is it to judge your goal weight vs. your " healthy life " ?? Isn't that why most of us had this surgery to gain a healthy life style and live longer, be more productive with our lives, or is it to weigh a certain number on the scale and say that we weigh... blah blah blah....? We all get hung up on the numbers game, and that is all it is... a NUMBERS GAME. Be proud of that hanging skin, you lost OVER 200 lbs, my goodness, how much more of an accomplishment can that be? That skin if removed would probably be anywhere from 5-20 lbs, depending on your own body... so at the very most 20 lbs loss on the scale would make you feel like you met goal? Be inspired, be joyous, be thankful we were able to have this life saving surgery, I sure am, and I'm no where near " goal weight " at 19 months post op. You are a success, who cares what the scale says, it is how you feel about your accomplishment in this journey and the new lifestyle and healthier you. Congrat's to you on your amazing accomplishment, I'm certain you look and feel 100 percent healthier than you were pre-op. Guess I don't have an answer for you other than enjoy life to it's fullest and don't get hung up on the scale issue. It there was not one scale in the universe.... how much happier we would all be eh? Sheila in Chitown =:-) > Hi everyone: > I just read a post about goal weights and I have a question. It's possible that the weight of the skin would be the difference -- one of my best friends who had WLS had 175 as her goal weight (she's quite tall), and couldn't seem to get there. Always around 20# too much. She had her tummy tuck, and they removed 20# of skin -- voila -- goal weight! I don't know if this is the case with you, but it might be. ~~ Lyn G

I have a friend that I will call when I get extremely discouraged about my weight. I haven't lost enough, I am not loosing fast enough, I want to be skinny, etc. The question she keeps asking me is if I am healthier now then I was a year ago. I can honestly say that not only am I healthier but I am happier then I was a year ago. A year ago, I was still in a wheelchair. So, if I have to choose between being healthy and happy or being skinny, I will choose healthy anyday. After all, the reason I had surgery was to live not necessarily to be my ideal body weight. Current Weight 339.5 lbs. and loosing again Dr. Ritter/Dr. Bryce

How can you judge goal weight if you have tons of hanging skin? I've lost over 200 pounds but can't ever seem to reach " goal " whatever that may be. Can anyone help? Good question. To tell you the truth, I haven't the faintest idea. I'd assume that you have more hanging skin after 200 lbs. lost than I would at 152 lbs. lost, and that it would have to do with your height as well...but I don't know how you make allowances for the skin in your calculations. I know one lady who has an enormous hanging apron, nearly down to her knees, after having lost about 100 lbs....whereas, while my tummy looks pretty poochy after 2 enormous babies and lots of weight gained and lost, it can be pretty much controlled with stern undergarments. I'd estimate her apron at about 25 lbs., whereas my poochiness might net me a couple of pounds, max. I think it must be an individual thing -- have you talked to your surgeon about this?
