Guest guest
Job Announcement: Director of Outreach and Communications The National Coalition for Disability Rights (NCDR), an alliance of disability, civil rights and social justice organizations dedicated to advancing social justice and economic opportunity among people with physical and mental disabilities, seeks a Director of Outreach and Communications to provide leadership in our ongoing organizing, advocacy and media related work. NCDR programs include ADA Watch, Campaign for Fair Judges, Disability Rights Concert, and the Road To Freedom. ADA Watch was founded as a rapid response network to inform and mobilize advocates in response to threats to disability civil rights protections. The late Dart, Jr. was the founding chair of ADA Watch. ADA Watch’s Board of Directors and National Advisory Council are comprised of noted disability rights leaders and representatives from a broad coalition of disability, civil rights and social justice organizations. NCDR’s Campaign for Fair Judges monitors the judicial selection process and informs and unites the disability grassroots in response to nominees to the Supreme Court and Federal Courts who pose a threat to the civil rights of people with disabilities. Our efforts have been covered extensively in the media including opinion and news articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, Reuters, AP, Washington Times, Boston Globe, LA Times, Detroit Free Press, and more. NCDR’s Disability Rights Concert capitalizes on the celebrity of noted musicians and other entertainers to raise funds and bring attention to the cause of disability rights. The inaugural disability rights concert outside of Washington, DC featured Grammy Award-winning artists Bruce Hornsby and Sweet Honey In the Rock and, in addition to bringing considerable attention to our cause, raised significant funds to advance our coalition work. NCDR’s Road To Freedom bus tour and traveling exhibit completed its first year on the road traveling more than 25,000 miles across all 50 states to produce nearly 100 grassroots and media events in partnership with state and local organizations. The tour, which will continue to the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 2010, garnered extensive TV, radio and newspaper coverage. In 2008, NCDR is working with filmmaker, (“Right To Risk”), and best-selling author, Antonia Felix, to produce a documentary film and book on the tour to be used as social change tools for disability rights advocacy. This campaign seeks to make America aware of the compelling history of the disability rights movement, how the courts have weakened civil rights protections for people with disabilities and to build coalition to address social justice, poverty and related issues impacting people with disabilities in the United States. NCDR’s primary focus is on using the media to educate advocates, policymakers and the general public regarding disability rights. We actively work to reframe media coverage from charity, sympathy and pity to empowerment and social justice. The successful candidate for the position of Director of Outreach and Communications will be able to build on the success of this small but growing 501c3 nonprofit advocacy organization. NCDR’s annual budget more than doubled last year and, over time, this candidate’s skills and commitment to growing the organization will be rewarded accordingly.
