Guest guest
Well, at almost 3 months post-op I can say that my lip almost touch in a relaxed position (4 mm space), whereas they did touch easily before my surgery. I also had lower advancement and sliding genioplasty (back and slightly down). It has improved a bit over the months after surgery, but it will never be like it was before the surgery. I am really trying to get used to this. I notice I am unconsciously trying to close my lips anyway, and that is making my chin look slightly contorted (I'm not sure what this means exactly but I saw it in your mail and it looked like it is the word I am looking for). Also, the right side of my upper lip is just slightly higher than the left side (about 2 mm difference). According to my surgeon it's because of some residual swelling, but I think it's because of my nose. My nose has always been slightly off to the right, but because of my SARPE, my nostrils have gotten slightly wider and now it's more noticable that one nostril has always been slightly higher than the other. And I think this is " pulling " the right side of my upper lip up. I don't think I would have needed my upper jaw moved back though. I also have a feeling (or hope or whatever you may call it) that when my braces come off, I'll have more " upper lip " left to cover my upper teeth. However, I'll just have to accept that my face and mouth are not the same anymore. And one day I am thrilled about that, and the other day I am not so thrilled... Guest guest
I guess I'd be extra disappointed if I got lip incompetence from the surgery. I've never had lip incompetence since my permanent teeth came in around age 7 or so. But my jaw surgery didn't make it much better and I'm looking at 7 or 8 mm open space. I just got a chin implant this morning to give me a chin (here again the jaw advancement and genioplasty didn't get it right). So far it looks like my lip incompetence might be a little better which would not really be expected to happen with the chin implant. However, I have a lot more chin now, and even though it's partly covered with bandage I can tell my facial balance is already more attractive. I am seriously going to to what is needed to correct my lips which might mean moving the upper jaw back or having a procedure on my upper lip to lengthen it. > > I had my lower jaw moved forward and a sliding genioplasty ten > > years ago. Guest guest
I had upper and lower jaw surgery about 2 years ago to correct an underbite and lip incompetence. My surgeon told me that he could correct my lip incompetence by about 90%. He explained to me that moving my upper jaw upward any more would result in permanent " frown lines " and I wouldn't show enough of my top teeth when I smiled. 90% sounded pretty good to me, considering that my lip incompetence was pretty bad, so I went through with the surgery. Well, I'm not all that sure how successful my surgery was. My lip incompetence has definitely improved, but not by the 90% he had promised. I would say it's more like 30 or 40% better. So I'm a little bit disappointed in that aspect. I also still have a decent amount of numbness and tingling in my lower lip and chin, which isn't much fun either. On the bright side my bite is better, my breathing has improved a little and I no longer show my gums when I smile. That's a good thing because I've had a decent amount of cosmetic work done on my top front teeth. In many ways I've moved on from this surgery and I've just accepted that my mouth and teeth will never be exactly right. I just try to make do with what I've been given. However, I understand your disappointment. This surgery puts you through so much, so to have things turn out less that perfect is very tough. - > I had my lower jaw moved forward and a sliding genioplasty ten > years ago.
