Guest guest
Hi Vhurgo, I was a borderline case - I needed about 4mm of setback and a couple mm of rotation on my lower, and about 1mm of advancement and rotation on my upper. I had very crooked lower front teeth due to my underbite, and the edge-on bite often caused me to bite my lip while chewing. So the surgery wasn't about aesthetics for me, it was really about getting my teeth straightened out and reducing my long- term risk of loosing teeth and bone. I'm not 100% happy with my outcome. I think I could've used about 1/2mm more setback on my lower, as I feel I'm just short of a proper occlusion. My bite with my molars isn't as good on the left side as the right, and I still have fairly significant numbness 18 months post-op. My OS and ortho are both happy with the outcome, however, so I must be clinically ok. So overall I felt it was something I needed to do, but I'm somewhat ambivalent about the result. I think I can sum up part of this thread like this - the less correction you need, the smaller your reward from the surgery. The more correction needed, the greater the reward. Risk remains the same either way. So the risk vs reward ratio is higher for bordlerline cases like mine, and lower for severe cases. So people with severe cases are less likely to be unhappy if they don't have a perfect outcome. If I had a terrible bite pre-op, and life-long self- esteem problems due my appearance, and these were corrected by the surgery with the exact same outcome I currently have, I'd be ecstatic and 100% happy instead my current ambivalence. BTW, the surgery cost me about 15k out of pocket. Hope that helps. --Neil > > > > > > > > Well I thought I'd give this a try and see if > > > > > I > > > > > > > could get any > > > > > > > advice > > > > > > > > or assistance from anyone who has been down > > > > > the > > > > > > > road I'm about to > > > > > > > > travel.
