Guest guest
Hi ! That's an excellent question for your OS to answer. Depending on the type of surgery you'll have, you may be well enough to only take a week off, or you may need a lot more. Your OS should give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of recovery. As to whether or not to wait until break? I think you should definately wait until break, even if your OS tells you that it will only take a week out of your schedule. I was fortunate enough to only need a week off, but the first week back was very tiring, and I've only been able to work half days so far. I don't know that I could actually concentrate in a school setting yet this week (I'm 10 days post op today). Have the surgery when you have the luxury of having extra time available if you need it. -Jen > I am new to this site and i think this is the greatest idea for > people to post their thoughts and ideas on this. Guest guest
As a fellow college student who just had her surgery in July...you need to wait for christmas break. Give yourself lots of time to heal and make sure you take care of yourself. I learned this the hard way. If you have any questions, please don't be afraid to ask!!! Guest guest
I had upper/lower and my palate widened on August 17th. I was in the hospital overnight and was never in any pain. I was never bed ridden and slept in a recliner for most of the first 10 days after surgery as it was just easier to breath sleeping in that position. On the 26th I was unwired and had to bands placed on. I lost 10 pounds total during that time and am now on soft foods graduating to a bit harder food next week. My surgeon recommends taking six weeks off as that is the recommended recovery period. You may feel fine during this period but remember your energy level may not be the same after surgery and may take time to return. Lots of walking is recommended. No lifting over 5 pounds for a month after surgery. I still have some swelling today but most of the bruising is gone. My lower lip and chin are numb, by product of the surgery. Try drinking a bottled water, instant shower! The bands stay on 4-6 weeks so you can expect to talk funny during that time. > I am new to this site and i think this is the greatest idea for > people to post their thoughts and ideas on this. Guest guest
as a college student myself, i found it best to do it over a break. i just had the upper jaw surgery, considered the least invasive, on july 12 and i was stuck in the house for two weeks, but for about 4 weeks i had swelling issues and eating was quite a chore. i can't imagine going through with that in november/december, when you likely have classes and finals. also, the timing depends on how close your school is to home and the surgeons. i go to school in DC, but my family and doctors are in Minneapolis, so for me summer was the only option because you really need to be near the doctor because you'll be going there a lot for about two months or more. good luck! > I am new to this site and i think this is the greatest idea for > people to post their thoughts and ideas on this. Guest guest
I could not have imagined going back to a routine untill 3-4 weeks post op. That is just my opinion on it. I go to a very large school though (ASU), and walking around all day when you can't eat very much takes a lot out of you. If I were you I would definatly wait untill Christmas break, rather than take the chance of having to drop out half way through a semester after you have put in so much work already. The pain meds cloud your thinking a lot too- just something to consider. good luck either way, -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " sass15666 " <sass15666@y...> wrote: > I am new to this site and i think this is the greatest idea for > people to post their thoughts and ideas on this. Guest guest
I'm glad you found the upper surgery " least invasive, " but that wouldn't square with what I've heard. To me, lower was least invasive, but then I had a really easy time of a lower advancement, thank heavens! Guest guest
I work full time and take 9 to 12 credits a semester on weekends and evenings, I can't imagine going back to school for at least 3 weeks after surgery, maily because my attention span was affected and the food issue was a problem, I went back to work at 3 weeks and just preparing food for each day was a chore, if you do not have access to a microwave it is even harder. I don't think I got back to my normal energy level until 4 or 5 weeks.
