Guest guest
Hello again everyone. I am in full braces and working my way towards surgery (only a few more months). I've had serious problems with canker sores the entire time I've had braces. I woke up couple days ago with one on the inside of my lower lip that was so large it actually caused my lip to swell to the point it looked like I had bees socked in the face! I've had so many at once that they literally made me sick (swollen glands, etc.). To the question - has anyone else out there had them this bad and have any of you found anything that works to prevent / heal these things. They are causing me extreme pain and make it very difficult to eat / talk / kiss / etc. I'd really like to try to find something that works before I have my surgery. Thank you all,

Guest guest
, Two possibilities: I haven't used it yet myself, but I've heard that Gly-Oxide is great for cleaning and speeding up the healing process. I'm getting braces on soon and ordered some through Drugstore.com in preparation. I've learned that regular toothpastes give me canker sores, so I only use natural ones now, like Tom's of Maine. Doesn't sound like that's your problem, but thought I'd mention it anyway. I don't know what the ingredient is that bothers me, but it never fails if I use regular toothpastes for a while. And I NEVER get them with Tom's. Good luck, sounds miserable! Luna > Hello again everyone. > > I am in full braces and working my way towards surgery (only a few > more months). Guest guest
I didn't have them, but several folks who did, badly, some time ago suggested rinsing the mouth with either Maalox or Milk of Magnesia, diluted considerably, several times a day. Anbesol, I think, is also helpful. Ask your ortho, and perhaps a trip to your regular physician is in order, too. Just to see if he has any suggestions. I'm figuring these are canker sores, and not cold sores, which are different critters. I think Fiddly also had good results from That fizzy stuff, the name of which has just flown from my brain. Not the fizzy stuff that is used to clean dentures, but another one -- ah! I'm thinking Amosan. Guest guest
Hi , Canker sores are horrible. I get them pretty regularly, and braces definitely caused me to have more of them. First, if you're using a " regular " toothpaste like crest or colgate, you need to switch to one that doesn't use lauryl sulfate (I think that's the name of the foaming ingredient). I switched to Closys and have noticed a marked decrease in the frequency of canker sores. With braces, you need to use wax on every tender spot before they can turn into sores. Once you have a sore forming, use wax day and night at that spot to reduce irritation. Now the cure that works for me - I use Zilactin. If you use it at the very first sign of a sore, and I mean the same day that you even suspect you're getting one, then it can significantly reduce the duration of the sore. Before I started using Zilactin my sores would take about 3 weeks to get better. With the zilactin they get better in about 1 week or less. There are different versions of zilactin - get the version that has benzyl alcohol. They have other versions that don't have the alcohol, but those don't work for me. I suspect the alcohol works as an antiseptic to kill the infection, which is why the sore heals so much faster. Use the zilactin 3 times a day and you should see fast improvement. If you wait too long to apply it won't help very much - so it won't help with your current sores unfortunately. Good luck, and let me know if my advice helped. --Neil > Hello again everyone. > > I am in full braces and working my way towards surgery (only a few > more months). Guest guest
I switched toothpaste and now use all one without the lauryl sulfate (it's called Biotine or some other). I'm going to get some of the Zilactin you mention - but is it prescription or OTC? I've never heard of it before - is it specifically for canker sores or did you just come across this via trial and error? Thank you for all of your suggestions / advice. > > Hello again everyone. > > > > I am in full braces and working my way towards surgery (only a few > > more months).
