There is a risk at anything you do. There is a risk to every medical

procedure. But the risk is very small and the benefits of this surgery far out

weight

the risk. The surgery has saved my life. I was a bigger risk for this surgery

because of my age and medical condition. I am 59 years old and weighed almost

400 lb., In a wheelchair, I have heart problems, an aortic aneurysm,

arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic bronical asthma, very bad spinal stenosis and

spinal

deterioration, and I WAS a diabetic, and I HAD High blood pressure that was

going to cause the aneurysm to rupture. I know longer have diabetes or high

blood

pressure. I am even able to get around the house now without my wheelchair. I

was doomed without the surgery and now I have hope for a better life and more

time with my family. I made the choice to take the chance and I went through

it all with no problems. I have not been sick at all. Even though I weighed

almost 400# I was still able to have a LAP. I was only in the hospital 2 days

and as of this day I have lost 131 pounds. It will be one year on the 22nd of

this month and I would do it over again in a NY second. I am going to be 60

years old on Wednesday but my new birthday will be the 22nd because that was the

beginning of my new life. Life is so good. Don't worry your wife will be

fine. Will the hospital let you stay in the room with her while she is in the

hospital? My husband stayed with me and it was wonderful to have him with me.

If they don't you might want to ask. They only charged us 10 dollars a night

and he had a real bed, not just a cot.

I know that I felt scared and was even trembling throughout the morning of

surgery, whats not to be afraid of, it's surgery and yes, i hate to say this but

at first she may feel like crap,. I did the first few weeks and then WHAMMO,

I started feeling like I won the lottery, i was losing weight, I was feeling

lighter, i could breath easier, get around better, my back was feeling better,

WHOOHOOO, it is great. But at first I cried that I had done it because I was

trying to reccuperate and had 3 small kids at home that needed me too and

cooking for them and doing laundry was not that easy right away. i do think your

wife is going to be much happier after her surgery and recovery and you will

love the new look of life in her eyes and you will feel happy for her cause she

is going to feel sooo much better. I haven't even made it to goal weight yet

but i feel awesome and am currently pregnant and I am the smallest I have ever

been pregnant and it feels good. good luck to you both and God bless you both.

welcome mike. it's fantastic to hear significant others'

opinions;we've had parents, grown children, spouses, & roommates (etc)

on here asking for support-----welcome.

i'm approaching my 2nd anniversary, my best advice for her is to

research & soul search. post-op life is not w/out its struggles &

sacrifice. she has to be vigilant regarding supplements and follow-up

appts, etc etc. & believe me, life is never ever the same.

keep posting.

For me personally, I would want a Dr that had more expirience. Mine's

done opver 1800 laps.

Just my thoughts, though.

My only regret has been not to have done it before. I was a

diabetic... I'm NOT now... High blood pressure.... NOT now...

couldn't walk far before I was out of breath... NOT now. In all I

will do it in a heart beat. I saw my dad deteriorate from being a

diabetic and finally passed on. I made that decision after I saw him

how bad. There are adjustments that she will have to make but, she

will feel great. At least I do. Your wife is the one who has to be

certain she wants to go through this operation. Research and find a

doc you all feel confortable with. Good Luck!!! One year post-op.
