Guest guest
I had totally forgot all about this subject. My background well the military is doing all my lower and upper plus genioplasty (spelling)..anyway probably after christmas (no date yet).....has anyone here had all three done and have had to have therapy for either speech or jaw movement? I also have issues currently with tongue thrusting and figured i would have to have somethign done about that. Any comments will be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
, I had a tongue thrust when I got my braces on. My od said I had to get it fixed prior to my surgery. So, for a whole year I practiced swallowing the right way. Then decided three months before my surgery to see a speech therpist to make sure I was swallowing the right way. He said i wasn't thrusting but I had my tongue to far forward when I swallowed. He gave me excercises to practice at home. So, by the time my surgery rolled around I was swallowing properly. I have one last visit with him to see if I am still swallowing proper since I had my surgery My upper jaw was moved 4mm back so I have less room. I hope this helps. > > I had totally forgot all about this subject. Guest guest
Hi , Could you let us know what kind of excercises you had to do? I already found a couple on the net, but the more, the better? I think I am also a tongue thruster but hadn't noticed before my surgery. By the way you say that tongue thrusting is NOT that your tongue is too far forward when you swallow? I thought that was the definition of tongue thrusting...I'm confused now...What is it then according to you? Nathalie > > > > I had totally forgot all about this subject. Guest guest
Nathalie, I was just placing too far forward on the palate. My speech therpist told me to put my tongue to the roof of my mouth and create a suction and then pull the tongue down. If you do it right it makes a lound popping/clicking sound. He told me to do as many as I could until my tongue got tired. It's suppose to help strenghten your tongue so you can keep on the roof of your mouth instead of laying relaxed in the lower jaw as some tongue thrusters do. Also another one if you have some orthodontic bands is try placing one of those are your tongue and swallowing remembering you should feel the band on your tongue and the roof of your mouth when swallowing. Once you get good at that one you can try it with a glass of water. I hope this helps. Another one to tell if you are a tongue thruster. Look in the mirror when you swallow you should not make any facial expressions. Most tongue thrusters scrunch their face before they swallow. > > > > > > I had totally forgot all about this subject. Guest guest
Did upper and genio, but my upper was a biggie, about 8-9mm up and over a little and back a smidgen...and did I have a tough time talking?...nope...at first banded shut, talking was annoying and I did VERY little (so rare for me, talker since birth;) but mostly my upper lip was numb for quite a while, so that made it sorta tough to move and too annoying to want to do much of. Since then...nope. inside everything works well, but again, my upper lip was numb longest on the left side and still is a little, it moves well, but tingles when I tap...and my incision up inside is def still healing bec that;s where I feel weird sometimes. Mine was done early Aug...and I healed very well, but when I have had a long day and talked TOO much (or honestly cried too much since I have lost someone very special to me and well it hit me pretty hard the first few days...) that's when I may get a little sloppy unless I use a little extra effort...so no worries, you will be fine when you're all done and heck if you can handle the military!! and bootcamp!!, this will be like a day off! (I would think anyway...never been, but my gf is in the army and they did her surg and she looks great, it went terrific and all thumbs up.) all the best to talkin...JO Be safe and thanks on behalf of all of us for dedicating yourself to protecting US ALL. > > I had totally forgot all about this subject. Guest guest
My daughter had all three done this past July. She has healed well. She did not need speech therapy but sometimes I notice (when she is tired) that I have a hard time understanding her. Or maybe its my hearing!!!! Her worst days were the first week after surgery and of course she got very tired of blended/liquids. She was not allowed to use a straw but had to actually drink from a glass (she used a plastic cups bec they are the thinnest to put to ones lips). After 8 weeks she ws then banded for almost 2 weeks, took off the bands to eat. She gets her braces off the end of December and has her last check up with the surgeon in January. What a great new years present..
