Guest guest
If you have a tongue thrust I suggest on getting an appliance to break that habit or seeing a speech therpist. I have had a tongue thrust my whole life. I had braces from 14-17 when the braces came off and I quite wearing the retainer all my front teeth pushed back out giving me an open bite. I have been in braces now that I am 30 for almost 2years just had surgery Oct 12. I have been seeing a sppech therpist for 3months prior to surgery. They wouldn't even consider my surgery until I got my tongue thrust fixed. Hope this helps. > > I had my jaw surgery on the maxilla last yr to correct an open bite. > I got my braces off on Friday but I have a question. I tounge thrust > so will that open up my bite again? Does wearing a retainer totally > prevent relapse?

Guest guest
i guess i am confused... you said that a tongue thrust is NOT when you push your tongue onthe top of your mouth? i notice that i cannot relax my tongue at all. even during sleep i push my tongue up towards the roof of my mouth and my tongue sometimes goes numb at the tip because of this. i have an overbite, so sometimes my tongue relaxes between my upper and lower teeth and i am constantly swallowing. do you think this sounds like tongue thrust??? michelle fry wrote: A tongue thrust is when you push forward with your tongue instead of to the roof of the mouth. Tongue thruts cause open bites. It is a very hard habit to break when you have been do it most of your life, but I was able to break myself of tongue thrusting. > > > > I had my jaw surgery on the maxilla last yr to correct an open > bite. > > I got my braces off on Friday but I have a question. Guest guest
I am not a specialist you may have a slight tongue thrust. You might want to go see a speech therpist who works with tongue thrusts. They do a test to see how you swallow and can tell if there is anything wrong. > > > > > > I had my jaw surgery on the maxilla last yr to correct an open > > bite. > > > I got my braces off on Friday but I have a question. Guest guest
I think she meant that when you tongue thrust you put your tongue against your teeth or in between your top and bottom teeth instead of RESTING it on the roof of your mouth. atleast, thats what i have been told and that is what i do. however, i was told that you really can't correct a tongue thrust, even my mom told me that whos worked for many dentists over the years. so she said that is why it is soooo important that i wear my retainer. but i was wondering, does a retainer COMPLETELY prevent relapse?? even with a tongue thrust??? > > > > > > I had my jaw surgery on the maxilla last yr to correct an open > > bite. > > > I got my braces off on Friday but I have a question. Guest guest
If you wear a retainer 24x7 you might not relapse. I was told the tongue is a very strong muscle it puts 4lbs of pressure per square inch thats alot of pressure. Braces puts a little more pressure than that on the teeth so they can correct the open bite caused by an open bite. After the braces come off I am not sure how much pressure a reatainer puts on the teeth. Also a tongue thrust can be corrected its hard because that is a learned behavior, but if someone is very motivated they can do it. How I did it was everytime I was driving, watching tv, and at work. I would think about where my tongue needed to be and I practiced placing to the roof of my mouth. After three months. I did not have to think about it much anymore. I did go see a speech therpist to make sure I was placing my tongue in the right place. I found out I was placing it too far forward on the palate. I found out that was mainly do to my overbite and since I have had surgery its easier for me swallow. I don't have to think about it now. I Just didnt want to go through all the orthodontics and surgery to relapse again. > > > > > > > > I had my jaw surgery on the maxilla last yr to correct an open > > > bite. > > > > I got my braces off on Friday but I have a question.
