So, in this convoluted mess I call Operation " I better smile like

when this is done " I was just informed Tuesday I will

need SARPE surgery in addition to lower and upper work. I've given

up whining about it, and swearing that if they make one more change,

I'll quit. Instead, I just want info - all of it. My question

today is this - How much time elapsed for you between getting

measured for the SARPE device and actually getting it installed?

Basically, how long does it take for the Ortho to get it after he

orders it? Also, how much is this torture device going to set me

back?

I appreciate the help. As always, you guys rock!

Hey Zoe,

Good luck with your treatment. I am in the midst of RPE, having had

the surgery 3 weeks ago. My appliance was included in the price of

the treatment, which was 6k total. I measured for the appliance

early, and put it on 2 days before the surgery. It is not a fun

thing to wear. Yesterday my ortho had to take it off to fix the

screw that had apparently jammed. Putting it back on was an

experience I never want to go through again, and would wish that you

never have to experience. Imagine the the doctor putting all of his

force pressing into my upper jaw trying to get this thing back on,

whilst my jaw is still loose and moving around. Any way, I have my

upper braces on now and things are going into place, and its really

cool seeing it come together.

Again, good luck with your plans.

If I remember correctly, my ortho took impressions for the expander

about a week and a half before the install date. I had the bonded

type expander so I did not have to get any spacers to prep for the

installation.

I wore it for less than 2 days before my surgery and I'll be honest,

I found it very difficult to get adjusted to those first few days.

Chewing was impossible because my teeth were covered in acrylic and

my tongue became raw and tender. Thankfully surgery was a breeze and

things became a little easier to deal with (thanks to the pain

pills). It takes some time, but you learn to adjust. Now getting

used to the that giant gap, yeah that's a different story =)

My SARPE treatment was included in my total treatment cost of nearly

6k. Money well spent so far, I'm liking what I see.

I'll be happy to answer any more questions that you may have. Good

luck!!

Any insurance coverage on the SARPE procedure, and was it part of a

bigger treatment schedule?

My health insurance covered the procedure without any hassel. I did

have to pay out of pocket for the IV sedation ($500) and got a peek

that the SARPE cost $5600 to my insurance.

The SARPE was surgical round 1. I will be having round 2 with lower

and possible upper jaw surgery hopefully by next spring.
